What Happened to Europe's Collapse?

FORTUNE -- Sherlock Holmes said it best. In Arthur Conan Doyle's classic story "Silver Blaze," about the disappearance of a champion racehorse, there is an exchange between a Scotland Yard detective and Holmes:

"Is there any point to which you would wish to draw my attention?" asks the detective.

"To the curious incident of the dog in the night-time," replies Holmes.

"The dog did nothing in the night-time," says the detective.

"That," says Holmes, "was the curious incident."

Its a short read about how everyone had predicting a collapse of the EU economy. Why I find it interesting is that folks around here often point to Europe as an example of the "Failures of Socialism."

And yet, facing one of the worst global economies in decades, Europe has hardly collapsed. It hasn't fared worse than us. If anything, in Europe they're doing better than us. The question is: Why?

I don't honestly have an answer to that. I'm just curious to hear opinions.

Maybe its because, instead of spending more, they are actually cutting back social programs.

The article goes into the fact they've had to make some hard decisions and cut programs and spending. I think that definitely was a factor in heading off any further riots like you had in Greece. We're currently having to do the same at the State budget level and will probably be forced to do so at the Federal level very soon.

I don't buy that they've not experienced the collapse yet, but I will be honest, that is just my opinion. I've got nothing to back that up. At this point the global credit and banking crisis seems to have gone global, and I recall that earlier this year or last year (I'd have to look this up for exact dates) both Britain and Germany were looking at massive banking bailouts.

its been postponed , like ours has. BUT it appears they sense the direction to move and have taken some small steps in the right direction, will we?
With a demographic cliff ahead of them they need to move faster than we, but not by much, our obligations are becoming greater even by comparison even as we have a longer more sustainable trend line demographically.....
