one nation, under god

ACTON (CBS) – The Pledge of Allegiance is becoming a sore subject in the Acton-Boxborough school district, all because of the words “under God.”

“Atheists and Humanists do not accept the notion of God,” says attorney David Niose.

An Acton family, who is atheist and chooses to remain anonymous, is suing the school district claiming they are discriminating against their children during the pledge. They want the words “under God” taken out

thoughts?

How did our nation manage to survive before "under God" was added in 1954?

We were a nation of hellbound heathens before gov't saved us from such a fate.

Heathens built this country.

Just out of curiosity... has anyone stopped to think how much it might actually cost to remove In God We Trust from all us currency currently in circulation...about to be circulated? To remake all plate, stamps, dies, etc.? Can't imagine it would be cheap.

Eh, just grind it off the old plates.

You don't have to replace current currency, just don't put it on the new stuff. Besides, this is about the "under god" in the pledge, not the US motto on coins. We don't require school children read their money every morning.

Hardcore republicans do though :D

And we don't require children to say The Pledge, either. Now, do we??
:eusa_whistle:

It is the pledge of allegiance to the country they are supposed to be full and participating members of. If the pledge itself excludes them, how are they fully vested citizens? It really is a very simple thing, and yet even you, who are usually pretty well balanced, refuse to acknowledge the glaring conflict of interest.

Congressional sessions have opened with a prayer before, during, and ever since the Revolution. So those who have a problem with "under God" in the Pledge seriously misunderstand the Founders' intentions behind the First Amendment.

Does anyone seriously believe the Founders would have written the Bill of Rights and then opened the next session of Congress with a benediction and said, "Gee, we are violating the First Amendment"?

No, of course they didn't. So they clearly did not see a problem with prayers at official government functions.

If you want to play the history game, why don't we just go back to what it was pre-1954?

What was wrong with it then?

The new cult of atheism is trying to become the dominant RELIGION of the country.

Good post, the word god in the pledge of allegiance is what makes children into good little christians.

Honestly, was nothing wrong with it before then?

Should all gov't related text have under god in it?

And Jehovah Witnesses refuse to "pledge allegiance" to anything/anyone other than God.

You know what they do about The Pledge in schools????

THEY DON'T SAY IT.

They don't tie up our courts with frivolous bullshit to stop other people from saying it.

will it be frivolous if the catholic church takes obama to court?

because it's the same thing-religious freedom

It will go to Court. Catholics don't roll over so easily from frontal assault.
