Welcome to the entitlement generation. My parents lived through the depression era and my mom especially had it bad, but they never asked for government assistance. Instead, they found work wherever they could, gathered their own food (including hunting) and tightened their belts. People used to be ashamed of accepting charity. Now people believe it's a right. My how times have changed.

Your so right. Times have indeed changed.

My grandfather on my Moms side, took off and left my grandmother to raise 4 kids on her own. Back in those days charity was a dirty word. My grandmother worked in a cotton mill in Thomaston, GA. The church folks had to convince her to take sweaters for the kids. My Mother detested welfare to her dying day.

People had pride back then. People today have grown up with Welfare, These folks think nothing of it because they have grown up with it and think this is how it has always been. They don't care that Welfare is simply spreading the wealth. Taking from those that earned it and giving to those who didn't. I know quite a few Welfare fraud folks out there. Yet when you call Social Services or go to Social Services to report it. Well, they pretty much tell you to mind your own business.

The Welfare system is full of abuse. Its one of those entitlements that loads take advantage of and that we taxpayers will pay for, forever. Don't see changes coming down the pike anytime soon.

I still wouldn't let a kid go hungry and I'm far from a bleeding heart liberal. Thats the kids. Not the adults. No reason an adult can't support themselves. None at all.

Most of the current generation of poor were never taught how to make biscuits from scratch.

I wasn't taught how to build computers either until I needed to learn to HAVE my first computer. I don't buy the idea that our modern poor can't make buscuts from scratch because Aunt Jemima never taught them at the age of 4. This is the age of the internet for Christs sake. If you want to learn our to make anything it's only a mouseclick away.
I learned to cook mostly on my own or from friends so I know what you are saying. But a mouse click is not so close for everyone, nor is a public library.
Biscuits aren't that nutritional either. Better compliment them with some lentil sprouts.

Naah some good sausage gravy to go with biscuits.

it's just one example, Ang. Mine was a long trek to master chef too. But, what I didn't do was pretend that I couldn't do it because no one overtly say me down and taught me how. To believe otherwise is to mute the human perseverance that defines the human progression from shit throwing monkey to where we are today. Again, look at global cuisines. It doesn't take the internet to cook food and it doesn't take a fairy god mother with a magic wand to prepare something to eat.

Personally, I have never understood how our government can pay Farmers to NOT FARM for one reason or another, instead of letting them farm and buying their goods to feed the poor?

In Maine, Food stamps are not available for the poor that do not have children, other than Seniors. Is each state different?
i question why the gov pays farmers not to farm too. But sometimes it has to do with what they are growing. Too much wheat grown by agri business brings the price down and hurts agri business.

State run farms would be a good idea. Perhaps they exist already? Some towns in MA have town owned farms. I'd like to see victory gardens become more available to individuals.

If we gave the poor flour, sugar, potatoes, etc most of them would starve.
Food preparation is a vanishing skill.

We are too lazy to even prepare our own food.

I agree...The poor used to be known for their ability to take basic foodstuffs and turn them into a lowcost meal. Inexpensive cuts of meat, cornmeal, flour, rice could all be cooked into a meal for the family at low cost. Many of the poor today are incapable of cooking a meal that isn't pre-prepared.

But before we put all the blame on the poor.....most middle class and wealthy can no longer cook a basic meal without takeout.

Cooking is a lost art
I think if we encouraged people to do more cooking and gardening we'd have less stress related disease and violence.

One thing I don't get from yor post, do you thing drug addicts should starve?

The big chains stores make big money off food stamps. The same way national housing providers make big money off of housing subsidies and drug companies make big money of insurance. Prices go up the more cash available.

I'd be glad to see food stamps restricted to non profit food pantries selling only nutritious products. But the cost of getting those established all over is too high. What you are proposing is the socialism and rationing. Not that I have any thing against that. I just think it's a long way off. Gone are the days when supermarkets had their customers best interests at heart. Well, they never really did any way.

I think that people who have money for drugs have money for food. I say this as an autonomous guy who buys his own food and his own smoke. If you buy rock instead of milk then, yes, starve and we'll take your kids away to a home with better priorities.

Typical blame the victim from the conservatives.

The problem is not with the crack addicts, but with people who have lost their jobs, people who work for $10 an hour and try to support their family while paying for housing, heat, electricity and healthcare.

These are the Americans who are being hurt not your Escalade driving crack addict

first off.. you are tragically fucking retarded if you REALLY want to apply the label of conservative to me. Seriously.

second, if you choose drugs over food you are not a victim; you are a dumbass. If I choose video games over paying rent are you going to come along and pay it for me? NO? then go ahead and climb off of your silly fucking soapbox.

and, again, this isn't a matter of hiding behind some starving child from a family whose breadwinner lost his job. That you need to hide behind that kind of imagery illustrates how dishonest you are about the issue. I've already stated that no one is trying to take the food out of a legitimate family's mouth. What I HAVE consistently said is that looking the other way while abuse goes on TODAY for the sake of rhetorical bullshit is just asinine. Thanks for providing an example of this specific thing.

Indeed, that you seem to think crack addicts and those who trade their stamps for 50 cents on the dollar drive an escelade says more about how laughably stupid your take on this is rather than anything a bout mine. You are absolutely the kind of liberal who would rather ignore the fiscal reality of food stamp cost than realize how insolvable the current abused system is and SPECIFICALLY why the left takes kicks to the jimmy for such illogical bullshit.

but please, call me a conservative again so I can pile on how retarded your input is.

In KY for a childless married couple the max income for qualifying for foodstampos is a bit under $10/hr.
How much you can get is a sliding scale as well.

The Depression is one of the reasons we developed social programs. We did not want families starving, migrating from town to town looking for work, dying in their 50s due to malnutrition and lack of medical care, living in hovels.

The US is the wealthiest nation on earth. We can afford to take care of our less fortunate

thats just asinine. Cooking isn't like the lost langauge of some forgotten culture. Look at global cuisines and spare the the bullshit when people in Peru eat guinnea pigs and people in asia are busy eating scorpions.

it's a skill fostered by necessity. I guarentee that you'd learn how to cook SOMETHING if you don't know how if you were starving in a desert with staple food items handy.
It's not even necessary to cook everything you eat to be well fed. You are right about learning to eat well from different cultures. If i ever get the chance, I want to try those grubs and grasshopers people rave about. My eyes closed though.

In rereading your previous posts, I misinterpreted your intent and respectfully withdraw my post.
Apology offered

too late we have given it all away to the more fortunate.
Crumbs trickle down to the less fortunate.

Indeed. Last year, off of a 100 foot plot, my fam had more bell peppers, banana peppers, tomatoes etc than they knew what to do with.

I make a hot pepper jelly that is to die for.

And my wife and i have a great time making it.

I'm hoping to start planting some fruit trees now that i finally have the room.

fucking A. I recently got into making jellies and I look forward to making a mango/habenero run this year. And, too, I made this with my father as a bonding thing and it's pretty cool. I've already started to plan what me and the special lady friend will be canning this year too. I don't have the land to plant trees or grow grape vines but we do have a thriving farmers market within reach.
If you send me a jar of some of your preserves that you've talked about before, I will send you an autographed photo of myself. And maybe some of my original cornbread shortbread cookies.

There are a few skin and bones crackheads hanging out in my neighborhood but you are right about the Escalades. Most crackheads come looking to buy in my neighborhood in style and well fed.

Well, thats a nice thought RW.

You and I both know there are thousands out there who are on welfare because they want to be. These folks have no sense of responsibility and have no problem sticking their hands out and grabbing all that they can. They don't want to WORK for anything. They have kids they can't afford but have no problem letting the taxpayer foot the bill for their kids. The real kicker is that they keep having kids. The more kids, the more money we the taxpayer give them. There are no consequences for their lack of responsibility. You and I will continue to pay their way for them.

I, for one, am tired of supporting the many deadbeats on Welfare.

I'm all out of the last run but if you remind me when I brag about the next run I'll send you a jar without requiring any of that. That is, if you can be trusted with my return address....

Id rather watch an eel in a fish tank than eat it. I have a pretty strict no fish rule.. that only occasionally gets broken when eating sushi.
