I'd like to have a discussion about racism with you guys, from a visitor's (I'm a Chinese visiting researcher) perspective. I am genuinely curious about how Americans think about the problem of racism. I have a short list of questions as a starter. I would appreciate it a lot if you could share rational and honest opinions.

1. In your own word, how would you define racism and racial discrimination?
2. Do you agree or disagree that racial discrimination is among the top three most serious social problems nowadays in America?
3. Do you agree or disagree that more laws and regulations should be enacted to protect people from racial discrimination?

The list of questions may grow slowly. Also, feel free to discuss other related questions/issues!

This is really not the place for legitimate research.

Besides, your methodology is flawed. You cannot gain a statistically valid sample from a static population in a message board. Further, you cannot develop a frequency in an unregulated environment due to the lack of exclusion. Any sample taken will be neither exhaustive nor exclusive.

Just in case you wondered, the discussion here is just a casual but hopefully informative discussion rather than a formal research (although I might have made it appear a little more formal than it should be...).

I didn't read all the posts by other members here, so I'll just give you my take even though some may have brought up my points.

This is the United States of America, and anybody can become anything they want with hard work, sacrifice and responsible decisions.

People of different races can live together in peace--people of different cultures can't.

I did read your post on education though. We in the US have an old saying "You can lead a horse to water, but you can't make him drink."

There are very few cases of discrimination in this country and dozens of laws to prevent it. Oh, we still have discrimination, but it's reverse discrimination.

If you are white, you stand less of a chance getting into a college of your choice because you are white. If you are applying for the same job as a black, the black stands a better chance at getting that job even if you are more qualified.

Race discrimination is a tool used by people of race to excuse their failures. When people of race fail in life, they blame their race instead of themselves.

As for the black communities in this country, they continue to be irresponsible which is why they are held back. Whites are not holding them back, they are holding themselves back.

The out of wedlock births for blacks in the US is over 70%. Single parent homes are directly related to poverty. Whites have no control over that. In the US, you are four times more likely to get murdered by a black than a white, but blacks only make up about 14% of our population.

My side? Someone has been watching too much star wars. Civilized people don't take sides, but debate the truth. Back in the 90's when Newt and the Republicans passed Welfare Reform, the predictions by the left were grim: people starving in the streets, increase in theft and violent crime, food pantries wiped out clean.......

None of this happened of course. In fact, the program had many successes. People stated they felt liberty for the first time in their lives. More poor people stayed married longer and there were more two-parent homes.

In Maine, they got sick of all the social leaches getting food stamps. So they created a new law that stated any adult with no children had to work a part-time job of at least 20 hours a week, volunteer their time to charity 20 hours a month, or be enrolled in a vocational program to learn how to get into a new career.

To no surprise, most of those people dropped out of the food stamp program. Seems they weren't that hungry to begin with.

The real solution is to make sure anybody that applies for some kind of welfare is fixed first before they get one red cent.

You can't solve poverty unless you stop the procreation of it. The offspring of adults generally end up like the parents be they rich, poor or middle-class. As long as we support and even promote expanding welfare families, they are going to grow and there will never be an end to poverty no matter what else we do.
