Obamacare Explained to a 5 y/o (or thereabouts)

We see who acts like a five year old in this thread..

Just vote out Obama folks, then we can start working on dismantling this monster of a law

Do you ever post on topic?

Its just that we all knew you were all set to gloat about how Obamacare was unconstitutional and the mean old Supreme Court ruined everything for you

The mandate was struck down as unconstitutional... Rightly so...

You want to (now) call it a tax, then go for it...

You want to claim that America now supports this tax, you're welcome to join BD in her alternate reality...

It was the court that declared it a tax and the mandate is in full force

With all the clout of the US Constitution behind it

Cookies are on me

Read the ruling....

I accept your apology...

Expansion of Medicaid was struck down. The mandate stands

you ever thought you'd see the day when people would be "reveling" for the taxing, fining and our FEDERAL government IMPOSING penalties on people for not BUYING something ?

this is how sick our society has become

Actually, they do that if you don't buy car insurance.

Actually, they don't.

Quantum: You just argued directly opposite of what Roberts ruled about the mandate, congratulations.

Dante: actually, word for word (in red) it is from Roberts ruling.

:lmao:

you have no idea what you are talking about

Obamacare Explained to a 5 y/o (or thereabouts)

We still need a simpler explanation for many of the right wingers around here.

Listen Retard.....the op didn't explain anything.

It didn't mention one fee or one new tax that this bill ushers in starting next year through 2018.

It's is pure propaganda. It ignores the purpose for insurance. It assumes that Obama has already installed the mechanisms to pay for it. They still claim this is not a tax increase even though if it's not a tax it's ruled unconstitutional.

BTW, the unintended consequences of this bill is a rise in unemployment. Once everyone figures out what it's gonna do to their bottom-line they'll start laying people off.

RETARD!!!! I must have really struck a nerve here. You must be one of these people who need a simpler explanation.

Wrong... Read the ruling again...

There is no mandate - 0bamaTax is not mandate...

Apology accepted...

you read the ruling? then you too, like the other wingnut partisan hacks, suffer from a reading and comprehension deficit. :laugh2:

read the fucking manual

The mandate requires a shared responsibility payment. The payment will be enacted as a tax penalty on those who choose not to purchase health insurance.

Congress called the payment a penalty. The Court cleared up confusion by ruling that for constitutional purposes the payment cannot be viewed as a penalty in order to keep it from being viewed as a tax. It was about constitutional arguments and theories.

CaspianX2 comments on ELI5: What exactly is Obamacare and what did it change?

This is just the part about what is currently in effect.

Already in effect:
  • It allows the Food and Drug Administration to approve more generic drugs (making for more competition in the market to drive down prices) ( Citation: An entire section of the bill, called Title VII, is devoted to this, starting on page 747 )
  • It increases the rebates on drugs people get through Medicare (so drugs cost less) ( Citation: Page 216, sec. 2501 )
  • It establishes a non-profit group, that the government doesn't directly control, PCORI, to study different kinds of treatments to see what works better and is the best use of money. ( Citation: Page 665, sec. 1181 )
  • It makes chain restaurants like McDonalds display how many calories are in all of their foods, so people can have an easier time making choices to eat healthy. ( Citation: Page 499, sec. 4205 )
  • It makes a "high-risk pool" for people with pre-existing conditions. Basically, this is a way to slowly ease into getting rid of "pre-existing conditions" altogether. For now, people who already have health issues that would be considered "pre-existing conditions" can still get insurance, but at different rates than people without them. ( Citation: Page 30, sec. 1101, Page 45, sec. 2704, and Page 46, sec. 2702 )
  • It forbids insurance companies from discriminating based on a disability, or because they were the victim of domestic abuse in the past (yes, insurers really did deny coverage for that) ( Citation: Page 47, sec. 2705 )
  • It renews some old policies, and calls for the appointment of various positions.
  • It creates a new 10% tax on indoor tanning booths. ( Citation: Page 923, sec. 5000B )
  • It says that health insurance companies can no longer tell customers that they won't get any more coverage because they have hit a "lifetime limit". Basically, if someone has paid for health insurance, that company can't tell that person that he's used that insurance too much throughout his life so they won't cover him any more. They can't do this for lifetime spending, and they're limited in how much they can do this for yearly spending. ( Citation: Page 14, sec. 2711 )
  • Kids can continue to be covered by their parents' health insurance until they're 26. ( Citation: Page 15, sec. 2714 )
  • No more "pre-existing conditions" for kids under the age of 19. ( Citation: Page 45, sec. 2704 and Page 57, sec. 1255 )
  • Insurers have less ability to change the amount customers have to pay for their plans. ( Citation: Page 47, sec. 2794 )
  • People in a "Medicare Gap" get a rebate to make up for the extra money they would otherwise have to spend. ( Citation: Page 379, sec. 3301 )
  • Insurers can't just drop customers once they get sick. ( Citation: Page 14, sec. 2712 )
  • Insurers have to tell customers what they're spending money on. (Instead of just "administrative fee", they have to be more specific).
  • Insurers need to have an appeals process for when they turn down a claim, so customers have some manner of recourse other than a lawsuit when they're turned down. ( Citation: Page 42, sec. 2719 )
  • Anti-fraud funding is increased and new ways to stop fraud are created. ( Citation: Page 699, sec. 6402 )
  • Medicare extends to smaller hospitals. ( Citation: Starting on page 344, the entire section "Part II" seems to deal with this )
  • Medicare patients with chronic illnesses must be monitored more thoroughly.
  • Reduces the costs for some companies that handle benefits for the elderly. ( Citation: Page 492, sec. 4202 )
  • A new website is made to give people insurance and health information. (I think this is it: Home | HealthCare.gov ). ( Citation: Page 36, sec. 1103 )
  • A credit program is made that will make it easier for business to invest in new ways to treat illness by paying half the cost of the investment. (Note - this program was temporary. It already ended) ( Citation: Page 830, sec. 9023 )
  • A limit is placed on just how much of a percentage of the money an insurer makes can be profit, to make sure they're not price-gouging customers. ( Citation: Page 22, sec. 1101 )
  • A limit is placed on what type of insurance accounts can be used to pay for over-the-counter drugs without a prescription. Basically, your insurer isn't paying for the Aspirin you bought for that hangover. ( Citation: Page 800, sec. 9003 )
  • Employers need to list the benefits they provided to employees on their tax forms. ( Citation: Page 800, sec. 9002 )
  • Any new health plans must provide preventative care (mammograms, colonoscopies, etc.) without requiring any sort of co-pay or charge. ( Citation: Page 14, sec. 2713 )

The original link has the citations for validation.

Why would you feel the need to explain obamacare to a five year old, cupcake? A five year old should intuitively understand it. In a very real sense, they live it. Five year olds simply do not make very many of their own decisions. Which is exactly how you want the entire population! :clap2:

Yanno.............it's kinda like paying your taxes. If you pay your taxes each year in full, you don't have to worry about the extra charges of penalties and interest.

If you have health care in 2014 (when the bill takes effect), you WON'T pay any penalties. If you can afford it and don't have it (i.e. the "free riders") then and only then will you have to pay a fine (which is the penalty).

No.....................the mandate is NOT a new tax, however, based on how our tax laws work, the penalty can be enforced via the tax law, which makes sense, because the IRS knows exactly how much money you make and whether or not you can afford insurance without a subsidy.

The only ones being "taxed" are the ones showing up at the ER without health insurance, which is roughly 1 percent of the country.

I have no problem with the mandate. Obama sure lied when he said he was not going to require a mandate like Hilary. He knew his supporters would rather spend their money on shoes, TV & video games rather than insurance premiums. Then they get free care when they go to the ER. without insurance.

I am glad we are not saddled with the original single payer Obamacare & now have Romneycare instead. At least we can still buy insurance so we can get the care we need when we need it. If we were under the original single payer Obamacare we would all be forced to wait in lines in the Medicaid system.

Canada's single payor system has rapidly rising cost.

Are you claiming that healthcare costs have escalated in Canada because of single payer?

What is the excuse in the US?
