Obama Supports Bill to Repeal Defense of Marriage Act - Politics - The Atlantic Wire

President Obama is endorsing a bill to overturn the Defense of Marriage Act. Introduced by Democratic senators Dianne Feinstein, Patrick Leahy and Kirsten Gillibrand, the Respect of Marriage Act would repeal the law, which defines marriage as between a man and a woman and effectively bans same-sex marriage on a federal level. The bill comes well after Obama instructed the Department of Justice to stop enforcing DOMA. National Journal reports that press secretary Jay Carney announced the president's stance on the bill in a Tuesday afternoon press conference:

The president has "long called for a legislative appeal for the so-called Defense of Marriage Act which continues to have a real impact on families," White House spokesman Jay Carney told reporters at Tuesday's briefing. He said the president "is proud to support the act, which would take the Defense of Marriage Act off the books for once and for all."

Very interesting to say the least.

Dumb law in the first place. It's one of those virtuous "laws" that tries to legislate biological emotions and will never be enforceable anyway.

Actually it does affect us who are getting federal home loans and of course, federal income tax returns. It needs to go.

He's throwing red meat to the base to make up for his other capitulations that are in the works.

Sorry, but just because the gay community hasn't gotten everything they wanted, I see none of them rushing to the polls to vote for a Republican, any Republican.

Exactly. Does anyone here wish to make the case that we would have it better in the area of gay equal rights if the Republicans had won the White House.......with a 'straight' face?

Cheney is a bigger supporter of Gay Marriage than is Obama...and Obama hasn't been exactly swift in ending the Clinton creation "Don't Ask Don't Tell".

Well, the Defense of Marriage Act was like a Flag burning law. Everyone knew it was unconstitutional when they passed it, but it calmed the angry dogs who wanted to go tinkering with the constititution.

I think Obama is barely keeping ahead of events. He only repealled DADT a week ahead of where the courts were going to strike it down and there a bunch of pretty credible challenges to DOMA out there. And keep in mind, gays are part of his coalition, it's not like he really wants the courts doing what he should have done.

That said, it would be really nice if this whole stupid issue would go away and we can talk about important stuff.

But it's gone now. Do you think it would be gone under McCain/P-P-P-Palin?

It's not really gone yet. And why has it taken so long?

I have no idea what would have happened under McCain, except to say with great certainty that we wouldn't have had 3 years of $1T+ deficits and an increase in the size of government of 25%, which is crushing economic prospects for gays and straights.

Actually, I think it probably would be.

Legally, DADT was always a farce. There a whole bunch of things you can be discharged from the military for- from being overweight to being a discipline problem. Never has it been a case of "Well, if you don't tell anyone, we won't throw you out."

So once DADT admitted that gays could serve without any real issue, (other than anything that might get a straight dude thrown out) the proponents didn't have a leg to stand on.

All Obama did was overturn it before the courts could beat him to it.

He must have been impressed with that penis study.

We'd be worse.

DOMA is an embasrassment to the nation. Its repeal is long overdue

Are you saying the people shouldn't have a right to define what marriage is?

What if Utah decided to legalize Polygamy? Should all the other 49 states recognize that?

What if Kentucky allowed 13 years olds to get married or people to marry their siblings?

That's the problem the Full Faith and Credit Clause causes, and that's why they forced the Mormon Church to renounce Polygamy as a pre-condition to Utah entering the union.

DOMA was an attempt to patch over that problem, and it will probably be struck down by the courts. And I doubt there will be enough public support to put in a marriage amendment.

Personally, I don't like when Courts try to play legislators. If you guys think gay marriage isa good idea, convince 51% of the electorate that it is.

Check the marriage laws in the various states. Kentucky as of 1990 allowed 13 year olds to marry. The Roberts court will continue to invalidate polygamy but will give in on same-sex marriage. However, if anyone tries to make you marry your grandpa, let me know and I will run and save you.

especially since he campaigned saying he was against gay marriage.
What he said in his campaign and what he does has proven time and again to be lies, he is a big fat socialist lying pig.

I think he probably still is against gay "marriage," but still fully respects the rights of homosexuals. Overturning the law just leaves the slate blank. Obama isn't asking for the law to be changed to include gay marriage.
Homos don't have any more rights than normal people. Unless it is the right to be totally confused and off in the head.
