Obama releasing 30M barrels from US oil reserve to offset ME turmoil, high gas

look, we have had debates here on drilling and I clearly remember people going off, denigrating opening up another patch in say, Anwar for a measly 500k or 1 million barrels a day for oh 5 years didn't make a difference yet here we are, THIS s supposed to make a difference?

first off they should approve the plan to get the Keystone Pipeline Project from Canada to Texas approved so we can refine their sand oil ( AND create jobs) ....that would be nice, maybe in 3-4 years when we go thru another round of spiking, we would have the ability to inject more supply, real sustained supply into the market.

at 60 million barrels thats barely 60 days supply to replace the supposed Libyan 1.5 million a day we are supposedly hurting for.

This is kind of why we have a strategic reserve. It would have made more sense to have done it earlier, but better late than never.

I hope Obama gets the message that Gas>3.50 is bad for electoral chances, and he moves to loosen up drilling regulations to keep the price in line. What we get is a pragmatic compromise where he rises above principle to get re elected, and we get Sarah Palin's policy of drill like crazy, but with a bit of adult supervision.

I have to disagree.

This is NOT why we have an STRATEGIC reserve... The price spiked at $115.00 3 weeks ago.... spot yesterday was under $95 and still on its way down....and this like cash for clunkers will be short termed. Then we have to put it back.....
History of why it was created...

Energy Policy and Conservation Act

Why it is used at certain times remains suspect. THIS is one of those times...

Really nice to see you again. And I love Plasmaball. Good debater/facts oriented/ and one of my favorite libs. Because Plasmaball can debate for true.

I still can't figure out what happened on the board that shall remain nameless, but I never thought that ban was warranted.

Yea, me and Reagan love our Plaz too :) He's all wrong on the issues but a great debater and pretty hottt tooo.. LOL

It's all good Tiny.. best thing that happened for me.. I love USMB.. it's home to me now.. I don't even care to be honest. A lot of great posters here and some good friends. I've also made some new friends and enemies too ;-) LOL I missed you.... so so happy to see you.. xxoo

This board is amazing and true blue. What you see is what you get out of every poster and I love it. Left or Right everyone is honest and you can trust yourself to say what you really think without looking over your shoulder to see what drama queen is going to report you to the mods.

I was busy up here for quite awhile because we had such an important election on the line and we were able to pull off a Conservative majority finally.

Wasn't easy. But we did it.

Now for some fun.

Fraid you're gonna discover that some people on this board aren't very honest at all.

I can think of two rational and plausible reasons for the government to sell off oil now:

the price of oil will continue to decline, so the Fed takes some profit on the reserve and that oil can be repuchased in the future at a lower cost; and, releasing the oil on the market will apply downward pressure on prices in the longer run.

We all know one thing...the high price of gas and oil is hurting this economy.

We also know another thing -- the nation needs money.

Maybe Obama is a player, just gaming the market on our behalf.

Where's the beef in this complaint?

It's might be, while slightly mistimed, a smart move.

Sell high, buy low...that's a bad thing?

Why shouldn't our goverment ALSO game the market like the speculators can?

People talk about running government like a business, but when Obama does it, then that's creeping socialism.

And if it does not go as planed... ops?

I mean I get what you're saying but the timing (4th of July/Elections) is like amazing. Then what happens if he can't buy the oil back at a better price, or only a bit better of a price? What happens if it ends up costing us more? I didn't know we elected a president to gamble for us... and that's not how a business is run, a business should produce something. Is this what Obama and his admin have been reduced to, gambling with buying and selling oil? I bet the environmentalists that get Government handouts are AFK lol.

And giving millions of dollars to Petrobas. For offshore oil exploration. Off Brazil. Soros has many shares. Mister eco friendly Obama. Not in the Gulf, but well we can destroy the environment somewhere else.

It's the hieght of hypocrisy. But then that's a lib politician isn't it now.

Obama and his henchmen are academic economic morons who have never had a job.

If you don't realize how much crap your country is in right now because of this idiocy called Hope and Change, good luck.

That was to help out the EU (France)...WHY are we helping out France? Libiyan conflict is really based on oil...NOT any "Arab Spring" and to help the Libiyan Rebels as a bill of goods we've been sold...We still don't know whom the rebels are, do we? *Cough* Muslim Brotherhood *Cough* Egypt anyone? *Cough*

Oh I know some aren't, but they are pretty transparent. I'd rather be in hand to hand political combat with a serious lberal enemy any day vs some of the other bs I've seen out there from supposed conservative camps.

One of my fave lines these days from faux conservatives are that they are "Goldwater" conservatives.

There was nothing conservative about the Goldwaters.

Goldwater and his wife were best friends with an arch enemy of mine. Maggie Sanger.

Amazing what elections will do to ya..
Indeed. The reserves were never designed to re-elect a President. I wonder if Obama knows that we see though his bullsqueeze move here?

Pathetic isn't it? There's nothing this creep won't do to get re-elected. The only morons falling for it are the brain-dead liberal zombies.
Indeed it is. I wonder how many Obama accolytes are licking his boots for this move and have fallen for the excuse for the release?

Obama and his henchmen have been bought off...while we and our liberty have been subverted. It's all by design. Corporatism... it's that simple.

WADR, BM, late is too damned late.
This should have been done months ago when prices were breaking $4/gal and reaching $5.
Gas prices have already begun to drop. To use our reserves now, I think, would cause OPEC to jack their prices so it ends up causing us more money to replace the stockpile.
If he legitimately wants the Speculators to drive the pump price down for the average working Joe all he has to do is sign his name.
Sign his name releasing drilling rights.
The mere announcement that we are allowing more drilling will force speculators to lower prices.
Why isn't he doing this?

I can't believe Strategic oil reserves are being diverted to domestic use in a times of relative peace. Their purpose was to be reserved for times of war for the protection of the people of the United States.

Not only has Obama shut down oil production in our own Gulf of Mexico, destroying thousands of American jobs, he's now selling our military needs that may arise down the river for votes for himself.

I'm sorry he did that. I think a President should be aware there are international entities who will be watching how fast the strategic reserves go down for the purpose of attacking us when we are low on reserves.

It just ain't fittin'. And it puts our Navy at a tremendous risk to use reserves flippantly in lieu of drilling in Alaska.

In the past, Obama has weighed in against releasing oil from the reserve to respond to fluctuations in gas prices. In 2005, for example, Obama suggested that the president should use authority to tap the reserve only in the case of a "cataclysmic event." Last month, he used the phrase "genuine emergency."
