WASHINGTON (AP) — In the midst of an unexpected break in Iranian nuclear talks, President Barack Obama is calling on the return of Americans held in Iran. In a message commemorating the Persian New Year, Obama says it's a time for families to be reunited.

He says Iran should immediately release U.S. prisoners Saeed Abedini of Boise, Idaho; Amir Hekmati of Flint, Michigan; and Jason Rezaian of Marin County, California. Obama also says Iran should help find Robert Levinson, a former FBI agent who went missing eight years ago from the Iranian resort of Kish Island.

It sounds like they are all Muslims. The only non Muslim is the FBI agent. Nice of him to remember him.

I encourage Eric Holder to go to Ferguson to see that the Brown's civil rights are being upheld...I encourage the police officers in Cambridge to think about how they handle black people because they acted stupidly in the Gates case...

The clown is losing it now he wants to force people to vote. This was entirely predictable from day 1 all you have to do is take one look at the guys resume, in the 20+ years between college and landing a taxpayer mooch job in the IL senate the guy hasn't accomplished anything. No experience no training no mentoring the clown couldn't land a job at any professional firm with that resume. You look at that resume and think, what's off with this guy Harvard degree and no career weird.

The Obama administration may not have much use for federal law or for Congress’s constitutional role in providing advice on, determining whether to consent to, and enacting any legislation necessary to implement international agreements. But it exhibits cloying reverence for a fatwa — a sharia law edict — issued by a jurist who runs a regime that is the world’s leading state sponsor of jihadist terror.

Even when the fatwa is a patent hoax.


Secretary of State Kerry, like his predecessor Hillary Clinton and his boss President Obama, took time out from his tirades against Senate Republicans’ exposition of the Constitution to praise the fatwa the administration claims that Iran’s top mullah, Ayatollah Khamenei, issued against nuclear weapons. As the Weekly Standard’s Jeryl Bier reports, Kerry, in the course of addressing the administration’s negotiations with Iran over its nuclear program, told the press during a visit to Egypt:

As you all know, Iran says it doesn’t want a nuclear weapon, and that is a very welcome statement that the Supreme Leader has, in fact, incorporated into a fatwa. And we have great respect — great respect — for the religious importance of a fatwa.

Then-Secretary of State Hillary Clinton also sounded a hopeful note about this supposed fatwa in 2012, claiming to have discussed it with “a number of experts and religious scholars,” as well as with Turkey’s Islamist then-prime minister (now president) Recep Tayyip Erdogan. In 2013, President Obama himself proclaimed:

[T]he Supreme Leader [Khamenei] has issued a fatwa against the development of nuclear weapons, and President Rouhani has just recently reiterated that the Islamic Republic will never develop a nuclear weapon.

But the “fatwa” in question does not exist.

The invaluable Middle East Media Research Institute (MEMRI) has done extensive research into compilations of Khamenei’s published fatwas. (See here and here, and citations therein.) No such fatwa has ever been published.

As US Secretary of State John Kerry meets with Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif for nuclear talks on Sunday, some analysts say that France has adopted a tougher stance on Iran while the US now seems eager to clinch a deal.
As the March 31 deadline for striking a deal with Iran on its nuclear programme approaches, France appears to have taken over from previous US administrations the role of chief hawk in the negotiations.

"France has taken the opposite path to that of the United States, which changed strategies with the arrival of [US President] Barack Obama," said Bernard Hourcade, an Iran specialist at the National Centre of Scientific Research.

Hourcade says France's current Socialist government has adopted the same intransigent stance toward Iran maintained by former conservative president Nicolas Sarkozy.

The French have taken a harder line on Tehran as Paris recognises Washington's increasing pragmatism in seeking to conclude a deal swiftly.

"Paris has clearly made the choice of going with the Gulf oil monarchies and seeking a conservative stability" in the region, Hourcade said.

France also seems more willing to oppose the Iranian influence that Paris blames for the violence and turmoil in Syria, Lebanon and Iraq.
