China is willing to offer assistance to Japan in its cleanup of a monster 8.9-magnitude earthquake, a tsunami and aftershocks, Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao said.

Chinese earthquake rescue crews were preparing to go to Japan Friday to join earthquake relief work if needed, China's state-run news agency Xinhua reported.

Wen also expressed "deep sympathy and solicitude to the Japanese government and the people."

China's International Rescue Team put its members, equipment, materials and medicines in place and are ready to depart for Japan at any time, China Earthquake Administration Director Chen Jianmin said.

Two Doctors Without Borders/Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) teams arrived by helicopter in Japan’s Miyagi prefecture earlier today and then traveled on to the city of Sendai, one of the areas hardest hit by the 8.9 magnitude earthquake and the resulting tsunamis that battered northeast Japan on Friday afternoon.
The teams are comprised of medical and logistical staff and include Dr. Nobuko Kurosaki, MSF-Japan President and a pediatric surgeon. Three more helicopter flights are scheduled to bring additional MSF teams to the area early Sunday morning.

Have you heard anything on what China is offering?

Yea, they've sent their emergency response teams and doctors.... just like most other countries. The Brits who arrived back from NZ yesterday headed straight back out to Japan. Thousands of countries are helping. I think it's good to get some perspective on it and not assume that we are doing something extraordinary. We are not. We are helping.... as we should.... and so are other countries.

It should be interesting to see how China responds. They want to be the major player in the region. Coming up big in a humanitarian effort would be a significant first step

So, according to the BBC, most international relief agencies are coming in thru the US airbase. We are apparently working with the Brits in a couple of areas, getting SAR teams from both countries out looking for survivors.

The USS RR is now on the scene, which will enable international relief agencies to get into the areas that they have not been able to access by road. The US are, I think, doing air drops of supplies to areas where the SARs can't reach yet.

One town of over 10,000 is completely gone, and there is no sign of anyone having survived.

Back in the 70s we used to train with Chinese pilots. Back then we seemed to have a little more trust then we have today.

There is a deep-seated hatred between Japan and China. It goes back a long way. It would be nice to see them try to get along for once.
