Politicians generally do get more popular when the economy rises. Even if that politician or those politicians had nothing to do with it.

In Europe almost every country got rid of their incumbent government after 2008, it's simple, they did so because the economy was bad. Some went left to right, others right to left. One of the few which didn't was Germany, and that's because Germany didn't suffer the recession like others because it had gone through a difficult period with reunification and is growing stronger.

Presidents have the ability to mess up the economy. They can push the economy a bit. But having long term gain, like is happening now would have happened under most presidents, unless of course they went mad on spending on wars and things like that.
