Wrong, they don't get us lower debt. We've had numerous tax increases since the Reagan tax cuts. None of them ever lowered the debt. Congress always spends every dime it gets and then three times more.

I'll try to put it another way: It doesn't seem like a smart strategy to tell someone they're stupid as a way to get them to agree with you.

So, either they're making a mistake by doing that, or they don't feel they need those votes in the first place. If it is the latter, then I wonder how they feel they get enough votes to win going forward.

I have heard them say that too much of their base stayed home. My guess, therefore, is that all they feel they need to do is maximize their base and they'll be back in the game. I guess I was looking for a little confirmation there.
