President Obama was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize. But what the Nobel committee really did was say thank you America for getting rid of one of the largest threats to world peace. Namely, the right wing republicans.

In many countries opinions of the United States are now about as positive as they were at the beginning of the decade before George W. Bush took office. Improvements in the U.S. image have been most pronounced in Western Europe, where favorable ratings for both the nation and the American people have soared. But opinions of America have also become more positive in key countries in Latin America, Africa and Asia, as well.

Signs of improvement in views of America are seen even in some predominantly Muslim countries that held overwhelmingly negative views of the United States in the Bush years. And this is not what the Nobel is for. The politicizing of the Nobel Prize does nothing but detract from the significance of the award. The committee's decision to honor Al Gore in 2007 rather than Irene Sendler was the beginning of the end to the award's meaning and relevance, today's announcement simply completes the journey. For anyone to defend the President's winning this award for any reason other than his accomplishments is asinine, but, because there are no accomplishments worthy of a Nobel under Obama's belt, you have no choice. Much like the Nobel committee, you do nothing but demean the prize and it's original intent. Even President Obama says he is undeserving of the award. Sadly, however, his hubris will not allow him to do the right thing and refuse the award. That in and of itself is a gross embarrassment.

Is it a great honor to recieve the Nobel Peace Prize? It used to be. When the recipient had actually accomplished something.

Nowadays, I'm not so sure.

Anyone who believes that our President has done anything worthy of this once great honor, well, you're sadly mistaken.

Whether or not you agree with the criteria - whether or not you agree with the selection or the achievements or lack of achievement - there is absolutely no denying three things:
1) Obama has elevated the stature of the U.S. around the world
2) This award is a manifestion of #1) and it also helps the U.S. gain international approval and cooperation to achieve our goals.
and
3) Numbers 1) and 2) help us in making the U.S. a safer and more secure place.

If your personal political ideology prevents you from being happy about this - then THAT is a very clear example of ideology before country.
