No such people as AMERICANS.

We should talk about liberty and freedom, as well as and slavery and racism and the struggle to expand the vote to women and minorities.

American history is not all skittles and beer, folks.
It did, however, make tremendous cultural and technological advances once the Europeans arrived.

Now we have Skittles.

The people who call themselves and the rest of the world know as AMERICANS have to do some reckoning and learn a bit of history.

By rights and by the correct way of naming things, places, traditions and legacies, the land mass now known as North America and South America should be known as North Vespucci and South Vespucci. And people inhabiting those lands should be called and known as VESPUCCIANS.

The Straight Dope: Why was America named after Amerigo Vespucci?

How do you like them apples?

LOL

I suppose there are no Koan's from Kos, right? They are really "O'Sullivan's"

How about the Philippians? If going by surnames the Philippians should be named

"Habsburgians" or "Hasburgs", since King Philip II was from the house of Habsburg.

Probably one of the crazier threads I've read here in the last few days... just because you think it should have been named differently, hardly holds up your ridiculous statement of "No such people as AMERICANS"

Lots of people arrived here before Columbus or the Vikings.
Arrowheads have been found that were similar to those of southern France and northern Spain. Then there are the ones who came from Asia. Who knows from where else?

Yes and african heads in central america, roman shipwreck in texas, egyptian artifacts in el salvador, phoenician text in peru , and cocaine in egyptian mummies which was from the new world - but only the Europeans were able to build a lasting presence and civilization.

^ a crucial post because it makes so much sense. :cuckoo:

We aren't "Americans." We are United Statesians.

Or, perhaps, we are "United States of Americans." But, grammatically, that makes about as much sense as a post by USMB simpleton liberal hack tderpm .

We're AMERICANS for Jesus Tap Dancing Christ's sake! We're not gonna be named for some forienger Mexican who didn't even speak English as his second language! (_:

Nor is our present.

History is fascinating and it seems silly to be so threatened by the past to make it into just another R/L battle.

Why would we not? We grew up being called Americans. The only thing special about the word is it defines us. Had we grown up being called Vespuccians we'd have accepted it the same.

Technically we should be called "United Staters", don't you think?

Actually, the states are anything BUT united.

But that's for another thread.
