New York joins California and Montana, Corporations are not people!

I totally understand WHY the SCOTUS came down on the Citizens United case like they did.

However, if we're going to clean up government, we have GOT to change the rules for campaigns.

Candidly, writing rules to prevent big capital from dominating the political narrative isn't going to be easy.

And the reason it is going to be so hard is this...

Who decides when a public service advertisment steps over the line and becomes a sotto voce advertisment for a particular pol?

Where does one draw the line between giving information and propagandizing for a particular political POV?

See the problem, and why the SCOTUS ruled as it did?

They truly almost had no choice if they weren't going to step on the 1st Amendment.

Censorship is stepping on the 1st Amendment. There is really no way around it, no matter what you turn upside down to accomplish the task. There is no high ground here, it is nothing more than a further disconnect.

Great job, Sally! Ya' neutralized a bit less than 1% of the post....

....care to take a shot at the last line?

I'll understand if you're too exhausted.

Why? Wasn't it something you didn't cut and paste, sweet cheeks?

Folks like you usually begin with their best rebuttal...
...meaning that you attack the style, rather than the substance.

So nice of your Lefties to wave the white flag so quickly...
...you're not French, are you?

How long must this Vendetta between Brooklyn North and South Brooklyn go on? Why can't we all just get along?

Money isn't speech..and wealth should not trump discourse.

Which..currently it does.

Money fuels speech. We all pay to play in one form or another. The Left's monopoly on propaganda is taking some big hits, especially in the last 20 years. We have learned to question. Deal with it. You are so far out there, that you don't know what center is anymore. You need to check your bearings. Bawny Fwank ain't exactly main stream. You find yourself left of him, get checked.

What's that sound you aren't hearing coming down your street? Oh yeah..it's a snow plow.

Get use to it. Small government..

Next thing you know some non-elected state agency will determine that "rednecks" aren't people. Anyone can incorporate but once you do, according to Montana, NY and Ca. you cease to be a person. Logic turned upside down in the liberal mind.

Interesting that the left accepted a decision by the Supreme Court that determined unborn humans weren't people and God help any state that tries to say otherwise. Now they ignore a Supreme Court decision that says corporations (made of people) have the same rights as people. Maybe that's the key to left wing thinking. The old segregationist and eugenics proponents think that declaring segments of the population to be non-human is the way to go in the brave new world of neo-socialism.

The point, which I obviously need to explain to you, is that your money is private.

Not always.

Federal Laws On Bribery - Bribery

There's an example of use of your "private" money that is quite illegal. Campaign contributions have the same effect, when combined with lobbying.

For the money=speech crowd, look at it this way. You have a right to say whatever you wish, but there are limits when that right tramples on other rights. For example:

You cannot blare forth your comments under powerful amplification late at night and keep your neighbors' kids awake.

You cannot yell "fire" in a crowded theater (unless there actually is a fire).

You cannot sue a publisher for rejecting your book on First Amendment grounds.

In at least two of the above, we see that a right to free speech does not imply a right to amplify that speech in any fashion desired regardless of the consequences. And that's really what we're talking about here: not the right of people to express their political opinions, but their right to amplify their speech by spending money on communications media when that crosses the basic right of all citizens to hold the government accountable through their votes.

And that's what's wrong with the Citizens United decision.

WHEN the Himalayan peasant meets the he-bear in his pride,
He shouts to scare the monster, who will often turn aside.
But the she-bear thus accosted rends the peasant tooth and nail.
For the female of the species is more deadly than the male.

How do states get away with defying a Supreme Court decision? Think any state would get away with declaring abortion to be illegal?

A resolution is an opinion. Corporations have legal personage just like they always did and it's not going to change.

The socialists are just pandering, they would no more get rid of corporate personage than the communists did in Russia or China.

Supposing it did happen and the rise of planet of the apes got what they wanted. There would be an exodus of corporations from the country that the world has never seen before. China would be jumping up and down with joy as would every other corporate haven.

Not that the people would be happy. Environmental protections would be gone, as would chances of consumers harmed by corporate activities. It would put a passel of lawyers who cater to the professional plaintiffs out of business but oops they're corporations too!

Stupid people are so entertaining. First they are dumb as a box of rocks. If that's not fun enough, they are led around by those who will tell them anything.

It's not true. Corporations have the same kind of legal personage in California, New York and Montana that they have always have.

It's like the resolutions idiots in cities sometimes pass against the war, or against homosexual bullying, or any other stupid idea.

But Soylent Green is people.

Ah yes..but..

In touch with the ground
I'm on the hunt I'm after you
Smell like I sound, I'm lost in a crowd
And I'm hungry like the wolf
Straddle the line in discord and rhyme
I'm on the hunt I'm after you
Mouth is alive with juices like wine
And I'm hungry like the wolf

Duran Duran.
