President Trump's about-face on Syria has left many of his supporters reeling. Repeatedly on the campaign trail -- and over the past several years -- he has mocked President Obama's decision to get involved in a "regime change" project in Syria. He correctly warned Obama back in 2013 that if you attack Syria, "very bad things will happen." In his first several weeks in office the president has gone from praising Syrian President Assad for his fight against ISIS and al-Qaeda, to agreeing that "Assad can stay," to suddenly resurrecting the Obama mantra of "Assad must go!" All in a matter of two weeks!

But what happens if Trump, who is apparently under the spell of the neocons, is successful and Assad is finally overthrown? According to a new study by the prestigious, London-based IHS Jane's Terrorism and Insurgency Centre, the chief beneficiaries of such a "success" will be ISIS.

IHS Markit senior Middle East analyst Columb Strack concluded that: It is an inconvenient reality that any US action taken to weaken the Syrian government will inadvertently benefit the Islamic State and other jihadist groups. The Syrian government is essentially the anvil to the US-led coalition’s hammer. While U.S.-backed forces surround Raqqa, the Islamic State is engaged in intense fighting with the Syrian government around Palmyra and in other parts of Homs and Deir el-Zour provinces.

Americans must understand one thing about Trump's sudden shift toward regime change in Syria: if he takes out Assad, ISIS wins.

More nonsense from Ron Paul's propaganda mill. How can ISIS come out on top when the US is committed to destroying ISIS?

For once Ron Paul is correct, if Assad is overthrown the next biggest and most organized force in the region to fill the power vacuum is ISIS. With Russia helping Assad I doubt that will happen.

The only logical issues then are how to kill Assad and how to divide Syria between Turkey and Iraq.

You think we wouldn't be on top of them like fleas to a dog, to prevent that from happening?

Yes, and once again it shows followers of Ron Paul have to leave their brains at the door to be accepted into the cult.

No, Ron Paul is wrong again. President Trump is committed to destroying ISIS and Mathis has assured us it can be done. Russia is attacking everyone who is oppose to Assad, not just ISIS.

Syria needs to get out of Syria.

Let the Turks and Kurds and Arabs kill each other. Let's stay out of it.

The only logical issues then are how to kill Assad and how to divide Syria between Turkey and Iraq.

:haha: Turkey needs to get out of Syria.
Ideally, everyone should get out of Syria and let the Syrian people hang Assad and start restoring the democracy his father overthrew.

A majority of the Syrian people don't want to hang Assad, you did know that, right?
The Sunni do want to hang him or worse and they make up 74% of the population.

And Fakey Jakey, in a Democracy: majority rules.

Wise observation. Thanks.

While Assad is unquestionably a tyrant, I fear the negative impact of him being ousted. I would hate for this to be the sequel of ousting Saddam.
