What's scary is that Ahok didn't mean to hurt islam in anyway. However, it's so easy for religious leaders to twist any statements and portray anyone they dislike as insulting islam. In that way it's very easy for any corrupt officials or any politicians to get their way.

A Change.org petition criticising him gained tens of thousands of signatures.[34]

Several organizations, including the Islamic Defenders Front (Front Pembela Islam) and a local chapter of the Indonesian Ulema Council, reported Basuki to the police, accusing him blindly of having violated Indonesia's Law On Misuse and Insult of Religion.[35] On October 10, 2016, Basuki publicly apologized to those he offended with his statement, stating that it was not his intention to do so, and that some of his policies that he said had benefited Muslims, such granting permits for Islamic schools, providing Jakarta Smart Cards (KJP) to the students, and building a mosque in the City Hall complex. He also pointed out that during his September 7 speech in the Thousand Islands in which he mentioned Surah al-Maidah, verse 51 of the Quran, the residents were not insulted, and even laughed during his recitation.[36]

So yes it's true the majority of muslims do not feel insulted. However, their religious leaders use this as a way to bring Ahok down. And that turns out is what matters. And you can't really separate the leaders from the majority. Large number of muslims respect their leaders.

Imagine, you treat muslims well every day, you safe their money from corruption, and then they trust their religious leaders. Why would you do so? This is not normal rational people. This is people blinded by faith.
