MSNBC opinion writer/editor Zeeshan Aleem blasted the uber-popular Top Gun: Maverick ahead of Sunday’s Oscars, arguing the movie is undeserving of golden statue glory and labeling it “insidious” for its positive portrayal of the U.S. military.

Aleem noted in a Saturday opinion column that it’s “remarkable” a popcorn movie like Top Gun could be nominated for Best Picture – it has a total of six nominations – though genre movies being nominated for the top prize has become more common in recent years thanks to the category expanding.

Top Gun is “as insidious as it is entertaining,” Aleem wrote. “It does not merely revive a forgotten human-centered spectacle; it also beckons for a return to accepting the American war machine as a beacon of virtue and excitement. It’s a poisonous kind of nostalgia, one that smuggles love of endless war into a celebration of live action.”

Top Gun: Maverick already found plenty of success in theaters, becoming the second highest-grossing movie of 2022. The sequel pulled in nearly $1.5 billion worldwide, more than $700 million of that from the U.S.

Comment:
MSNBC is a far left racist bigoted Democrat TV channel.
It provides a venue for angry genocidal bigots such as Zeeshan Aleen to spew their hate on.
There are plenty of backwards racist liberal movies for Aleen to watch.
Audiences are disgusted with the left wing hate being found in most movies being made nowadays.
Aleen's dirty little secret is that he hates America, and he wants to destroy western civilization and that is really why he loathes Top Gun: Maverick so much.

As a movie I found it just ok, maybe my expectations were too high especially as I grew up with the first movie. I didn't really look for any specific messsges and this movie was tame by most comparisons.

And?

Compared to the other options, Top Gun was Oscar worthy
Actually an exciting two hours
The only movie close was All Quiet on the Western Front

Have you actually seen Everything, Everywhere, All at Once or Banshees of Inisherin?

Unwatchable

I can smell the soy from here.

"This movie was not loaded with virtue signals and social justice messages and has a patriotic undertone and is, therefore, toxic"

Zasheen, and everyone that thinks like him, are welcome to sit on the range for target practice.

Pretty hilarious this idiot is acting like he hates the idea of the US war machine, yet fully supports a lifelong warmonger like Biden.

Total fucking stooge.

I like Tom Cruise, but I've never watched the Top Gun movies.
Have absolutely no interest in them at all, nor do I have any interest in Jerry Maguire, or any of his romantic style movies.

I like his scifi and action movies, like Mission Impossible.

I'm personally finding it hard to believe that Maverick is still a fighter pilot 35 years after his adventures in the 1980's.

I don't know what it is about 80's action stars who feel a need to do the same movies they did 40 years ago (and, yes, I'm including the guy in my Avi).

Seriously?, another "culture war"? I don't get the outrage here.
It's a movie. The movie is a throwback. A dinosaur. A relic of a past that Aleem is railng agains. Which is one of the reasons it was so popular.

But at the end of the day..it's just a movie.

How about "The Mummy" remake? :auiqs.jpg:

Almost unwatchable IMO.

Everything, everywhere is like taking a hit of acid in a strobe light factory.
Wild-wild movie.
Banshees I won't watch. I just can't accept the premise of the movie in that a man doesn't want to talk to another man so bad he starts cutting of fingers to try and get the other guy to stop talking.
I mean.. seriously.

I made it through Banshees and it got more ridiculous as it went on. The Guy cuts off four fingers and throws them on the ground so the whiners pet minature donkey eats them and chokes to death

I suffered watching Everything, Everywhere thinking……maybe I don’t get it. Then I realized I do get it and it is just a stupid movie with bad acting.

I don’t know what the critics were watching. But given the recent Oscar winners, they are consistent

Completely.
We watched Shape of Water based on raving reviews... and spent most of the time swearing there must be another Shape of Water movie that we missed.

Top Gun is just the type of movie critics hate. Along with the Black Panther sequel. Popular, entertaining movies that did well in the box office.

Why were they nominated?
To get people to watch an otherwise boring Oscar broadcast full of movies nobody saw or liked and an audience full of actors nobody ever heard of.

They have no chance of actually winning as the Oscars will be heaped onto forgettable movies with boring acting

That was the silly thing about the movie. No way an old guy like that would be a test pilot for aircraft going Mach 10.

Ummm….In Top Gun movies, you need to suspend reality

The cover was that Maverick had an influential Admiral Iceman who had his back

Black Panther 2 was garbage. The “critics” loved it because it was all about a fake African utopia. It was one of the worst MCU movies.

How much of this stems from the fact this critic is almost certainly a low-T progponce that sees toxic masculinity in anything patriotic?
Even a cast of transgender lesbian muslim dwarves wouldn't be enough to offset his terror at the idea of having any kind of physical confrontation.
It's hard to enjoy a movie when you've pissed your seat before the opening scene is over

Top Gun was one of only a few halfway watchable movies that came out of Hollywood last year. Most were miserable failures that hurt to watch...the pain only relieved by changing the channel, walking out of the theater, or pass out drunk after opening credits.

So for MSNBC commentator to opine about how it's just wrong on every level means that he absolutely has no skills or understanding as to what makes a movie work with the people.

(BTW....John Wick 4 is coming our later this month)

Even dumb movies can be done brilliantly. Arnold Swartzenegar's old Predator movie was dumb with bad lines and plot but the action, tempo, and development was brilliant. So the movie worked....I loved it.

Now they want a black transvestite to play tinkerbell in a Peter Pan remake....I wanna puke. I definitely don't want to have my shadow anywhere near the parking lot of a theater showing that crap.

Movies are supposed to be entertainment....not a laundry list of Hollywood style morality. And the Hollywood morality has always been the lowest rung of behavior that has a revolving door on the local jail...something always of a scandal. Most of Americans do not idolize Hollywood morality. In fact most Americans think Hollywood's morality is disgusting.

So....when Hollywood gets some talent and begins being entertaining again....maybe I'll actually pay attention to anything they put out....but in the meantime they are on my "ignore" list.
