More patients flocking to ERs under Obamacare

freewill, thr "That 12 percent spike in the number of patients — many of whom aren't actually facing true emergencies — is spurring the hospital to convert a waiting room into more exam rooms" is called HASTY GENERALIZATION.

In other words your sweeping conclusion has one fact.

The golden rule of liberalism is proved out with what is happening. They said it would reduce the ER visits and the exact opposite has occurred. As it is with all liberal things. And of course it is those getting the free ride who are abusing the system, just as we said.

More patients flocking to ERs under Obamacare

It wasn't supposed to work this way, but since the Affordable Care Act took effect in January, Norton Hospital has seen its packed emergency room become even more crowded, with about 100 more patients a month.

That 12 percent spike in the number of patients — many of whom aren't actually facing true emergencies — is spurring the hospital to convert a waiting room into more exam rooms.

"Experts cite many reasons: A longstanding shortage of primary-care doctors leaves too few to handle all the newly insured patients. Some doctors won't accept Medicaid. And poor people often can't take time from work when most primary care offices are open, while ERs operate round-the-clock and by law must at least stabilize patients.

Plus, some patients who have been uninsured for years don't have regular doctors and are accustomed to using ERs, even though it is much more expensive. Others have let illnesses and injuries fester so long they have become emergencies.

"It's a perfect storm here," said Dr. Ryan Stanton of Lexington, president of the Kentucky chapter of the ER physician group."We've given people an ATM card in a town with no ATMs."

maybe this is why Obamacare includes funding to train more general practitioners. Not that obamacare is necessarily the best way to increase insured, but the story actually is more a positive than anything. Imagine, teaching newly insured people to find GP's and teaching provider networks to provide more walk in clinics. Horrors.

Obama wants doctors to become government workers...

Uh.....the AMA limited the number of doctors because, "all youse money belongs to us". Now they are wanting more physicians and want the government to help pay for it.

So.........government workers or funding is totally awesome if the *right* people want access........

just WHY do they need more primary care doctors all of a sudden.....? could it be that the number of doctors is getting smaller daily because they are leaving the business because of Obamacare....?

A 2012 Urban Institute study of 500 primary-care doctors found that 30 percent of those aged 35 to 49 planned to leave their practices within five years. The rate jumped to 52 percent for those over 50.
...
The Association of American Medical Colleges estimates the United States will be short 45,000 primary-care doctors in 2020, when 268,000 are projected to be practicing. That compares to a shortfall of 9,000 in 2010, with 254,800 practicing.

Hospital officials said they are helping patients find primary-care physicians and hope that helps eventually lessen ER visits.

They couldn't get "Primary-care physicians" without Obamacare.

And they are helping blind people afford glasses.

Uh oh, you head turned all the way around and ended up your butt. You might want to see a "specialist".

They didn't give a reason why though

Good point, it is probably due to Global Warming.

I think they actually did, an increase in Medicaid population.

Exactly the point, poor social planning on the part of Obamacare.
