It is relatively high in the US (21 years old). Still, teens drink alcohol. In Europe, the minimum age is lower, but there is no big difference in alcohol use between European and American young people. Lowering minimum ages actually should promote responsible drinking.
Why do so many Americans still want such a high minimum age even though it doesn't work?

The police have much more power with the ridiculously high drinking age. The laws has nothing to do with health and safety.

You obviously do not indulge, but why have a plant illegal at all?

America is NOT Europe.

It will NEVER be Europe.

Quit trying to make America into Europe.

Europe is fine where it is.

Leave it there.

So you are saying that American adolescents are less responsible than European ones?

The argument used to be that if you could serve in the Military and die for your Country at 18 you should be able to vote at the same age. Can you be trusted to make the decision in the voting booth to hire the most powerful man in the world and not have the maturity to buy a six pack of beer?

The laws regarding the age of adulthood are ridiculous and arbitrary, IMO. Not just for alcohol. Some states you can get a driver's license at 16, some 18. Some, you can get married pre-18 with parental permission. The same with joining the military. You cannot legally buy a handgun until you're 21.

But you can be tried as an adult at 13 if the public outrage is enough.

Our age-based laws are an inconsistent hodge-podge from various times and based on differing criteria.

It's all politics.

There are some rational, reasonable initiatives that are political hot potatoes. If you SUPPORT lowering the drinking age, many people will like you and a very few will vote for you because of that stance. But ten times than number will villify you and campaign against you for supporting lowering the drinking age. Think about MADD - you would end up on their "Execute immediately!" list.

So there is no political upside to supporting a lowering of the drinking age, and thus, it will never happen. Same goes for legalizing prostitution other than in states that are run by goofballs.
