Mi, have to work 29 hours a week to get Medicaid.

LANSING, MI - The Michigan Senate on Thursday passed legislation requiring able-bodied Michigan Medicaid recipients to work 29 hours per week to continue receiving health insurance.

Michigan expanded Medicaid in 2013 with the Healthy Michigan program, which now insures 683,769 people, according to the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services.

Senate Bill 897, sponsored by Sen. Mike Shirkey, R-Clark Lake, would require able-bodied Medicaid recipients to work 29 hours per week in order to continue receiving Medicaid. People would be exempt from the requirements if they met certain criteria, like being over 64, having a disability, being pregnant, or being a caretaker for a dependent with a disability or family member under the age of six.

What if they can't find a job, we do not have an over abundance of jobs in MI. Isn't that what Walmart does, hire part time so they don't have to pay for health ins.

No healthcare if not:

Prohibit a recipient from receiving medical assistance for one year if he or she failed to meet qualifying activities or report family income or knowingly made a false statement in complying with that requirement, after being given one warning and not complying within 30 days.

This is so the elites do not have to pay taxes. Well if you are frail or disabled , pg you do not need to. Crap I hope people can find work.

You can also attend school to meet the requirements.

If you can't find a job working 29 hours a week then you're a fucking loser. It's that simple. God forbid we'd require someone to put forth some effort to collect their hand out off the backs of others busting their ass to make a living.

That would be Walmart.

If they're not losing medicaid benefits and can work what's the big deal? This should have been done in Michigan along time ago. I know several people in one particular city that are able bodied and on Medicaid and food stamps. Make their lazy asses work for the medicaid.

The main thing is to use government programs to twist arms. What's the point in a welfare state if not to herd the riff-raff?

This don't make no sense, the employees don't pick the stupid hours...

A person say gets a partime job at Arbys, some weeks they get to work 32 hours and some weeks just scheduled for 28 hours..

The can start to offer slave wages to get health ins. Part of the plan. I mean I agree an able bodied person should look for work , his job is to find a job or go to school, but to not have healthcare, I mean this is the beginning of slave labor, 100% employment and slave wages.
I think I know why people sell crack on the street, money for Health Care.

A. I know a guy on Medicaid who voted for trump. I do hope it FS him in the a.

We all know people take advantage of the Medicare system. I or we all hope republicans weed out fraud. Who can be against that?

Who died and made you a little tin god? Some people may well not be able to get 29 hours a week. God forbid we close off all exemptions. Think!

Great. So a pell grant and student aid, knocked up...kids under six...basically the same creatures that are on medicaid today. In other words nothing will change.
How can we change it? Easy. Cut off federal payments to states. States cant print money. And the failures wont be hidden by spreading them across the country.

60% of those that receive Medicaid already work. Does that mean the 40% that don't are going to rush out and find work? Nope. Read on.
The bill will provide for an exemption from the work requirements for a recipient who was any of the following: pregnant; receiving disability benefits; a full-time student; medically frail; the caretaker of a family member under six years old, of a dependent with a disability who needed full-time care, or of an incapacitated individual; a recipient who met a good cause temporary exemption; a recipient with a medical condition that resulted in a work limitation; a recipient who had been incarcerated within the last six months; a recipient of unemployment benefits; or a recipient under 21 years old who had previously been in foster care.

The following qualified activities will meet the work requirement:
Employment or self-employment, or having income consistent with being employed or self-employed.

  • Education directly related to employment, including high school equivalency test preparation program and post secondary education.
  • Job training directly related to employment.
  • Vocational training directly related to employment.
  • Unpaid workforce engagement directly related to employment, including an internship.
  • Tribal employment programs.
  • Participation in substance use disorder treatment.

Taking into account 60% of the people on Medicaid work, the exemptions in the bill, and what qualifies as work, just about everyone on Medicaid today will be on Medicaid after the bill goes into effect. All you have to do to qualify is attend classes at any community college or vocational school. And guess what? If you are covered by Medicaid and have a family income of less than $25000 a year, you can get a free ride. Even if your family income is as high as 50,000, you will all or most of your expenses paid. This is so typically of Republican's get tough on social welfare legislation. They put so many exceptions and loopholes that practically no one is actually effected. That allows them to please their constituents without upsetting any voters.

And if your family income is less that $25,000 and you have Medicaid you're guaranteed a free ride at community colleges. Even if you have a family income as high as 50,000, you will get all or most of your expenses paid.

If this bill passes you can bet, every benefit coordinator in every healthcare facility in the state that takes Medicaid will be passing out information on how to utilize all the loopholes to keep Medicaid. Hospitals can loose a huge amounts of money if they have to treat a patient without healthcare coverage. They will give the patient a form to determine if they qualify for Medicaid and will be told what will qualify them. The patient fills the form out so they qualify. It may or may not be accurate, but the hospital will very likely be paid for part of their services.

Just how big can those cost be? Recently a homeless person walked out into a lane of traffic and was hit by a car. He was rushed to an ER hospitalized for over two weeks and had multiple surgeries. He passed away with a medical bill of $670,000.

Yes, but that's how republicans see healthcare. If you can't get healthcare coverage then just die.

In most countries with developed economies, people do not have to die because they lack healthcare coverage. Unfortunately, the US is not one of them anymore. Changes in Obamacare regulations have cut premiums by eliminating coverage for life saving treatments and added yearly maximums.

I've never had a problem finding a job. I was working 30 to 35 hours a week when I was still in high school. The work is out there for people who want to do it.
