Alpha males tend to thrive in cutthroat offices—and restaurants that douse their food in hot sauce.

A study by researchers from the University of Grenoble found that men who preferred spicier foods also tended to have higher testosterone levels than men with milder tastes. In the study, published in the journal Physiology & Behavior, 114 men from age 18 to 44 were polled on whether or not they liked spicy foods, and were later served a dish of mashed potatoes which they were allowed to season with however much hot sauce and salt they wanted.

The researchers found that men with higher testosterone levels tended to use more hot sauce and indicated a greater preference for it. There was no relationship between testosterone and the amount of salt used. High testosterone levels in men have long been linked to dominant and competitive traits.

It’s hard to draw conclusions about the hot sauce-testosterone connection. The link could be biological, if spicy food raises testosterone levels. A 2013 study found that mice exposed to capsaicin, the chemical that makes food hot, had higher testosterone levels than a control group. Or it could be environmental. In cultures that associate spicy foods with masculinity, alpha males might feel pressure to go heavy on hot sauce. Another possible explanation is the condiment’s color: A 2013 study found that men who preferred red, the color of the sauce used in this study, tended to have higher testosterone than those who liked blue.

I like my food somewhere between hellfire and oh my god it burns

if your nose isn't runnin' and your eyes aren't red it's weak salsa.

I love spicy foods, but mashed potatoes? really? Who normally spices up their mashed potatoes?

That's your basic slather with sour cream and chives sort of food, not your load up with tabasco food.

We'd get along great at restaurants. I don't REALLY enjoy food unless its spicy. I can appreciate non-spicy food but it's not my preference.....at all.

Nice. Yea I'm that guy who always asks for extra spicy and they give me that doubtful look until they see me eat it. My favorite local thai place closed and that was the only place that understood me :(

I dunno about this study -- I loooove me some spicy food, I constantly challenge Thai restaurants to bring out something more than "gringo hot" and then send it back -- and I'm as gentle as they come. :eusa_angel:

As we age our taste buds dim too, so we need more flavor than we used to (and kids can't handle the heat).

I used to love this stuff when it came out, made with Scotch Bonnet peppers -- unfortunately they've since changed the forumla to a mustard base, which is useless in this application. I like my mustard too but it's not the point of a hot sauce ....

High_Gravity should be in on this...

I love spicy food and drink. Thank goodness I have an iron GI. The hotter the better in my opinion.

At one Thai restaurant in San Francisco I kept telling them the dish wasn't hot enough.

They came out and asked me if I have been to Bangkok.
I said, "that depends on how you're spelling it"... :eusa_shifty:

Ha!! I love Thai. This place near my house serves Jungle Curry and its hot as hell, not to mention delicious. I also hit up an Indian Restaurant that has heat levels of 1,2,3,4 and Desi Hot. As you can imagine the desi is fierce. In all honesty its too much because all you taste is the heat. The food no longer has any flavor because of the over powering heat. I stay with 4 which is still blazing hot but you can at least taste the food.

Well, sure, they CAN, but I wouldn't think it's the sort of food most people associate with spiciness. Maybe that's the whole point of this thing, but you can always trot out a bowl of jello if that's what you wanted to test.

Give me a test where I had a choice between some Thai red curry and a sandwich or something, and I know what I'd take every time, but it just seems odd that they chose something like Mashed potatoes to test their theory.

my guess is mashed potatoes are without seasoning taste neutral ,like noodles with out sauce.
