Supposedly there's a bunch of other cracks like this one in the area, though this one is the largest yet. They believe it's caused by heavy rainfalls in 2014 - takes a while for the water to fully evaporate, but when it does the "sand" basically collapses into the trench because unlike dried mud it cannot hold it's shape over air gaps left by water seepage.

Probably due to subsidence which is caused by the depletion of the aquifer in the area. As you pump the water out the land will sink, pump enough and the aquifer collapses. My guess is that is the cause.
