Sorry if I gave the impression of a cheap labor force as good for Americans. As a former part of that labor force with a family to support, I tried my best to make a living wage.

I said an "alternative" cheap labor force, what they call in my state the "underground economy", people getting paid "under the table".

I'm a small business owner and paying wages in accordance to state and federal law is just part of the cost of doing business. It also provides a measure of protection to the workers and to the public.

OTOH, I'm Irish, and my fore-bearers were the Mexicans/Central Americans of yesteryear. I'm sure you've heard of the NINA signs in the windows of businesses. Of course, in those days there was no visa requirements for entry, but hatred of the newcomers was the same, even using the same old reasons we hear today. Mainly that they are dirty, uneducated, thieves and murderers, and breed like rabbits. And I remember the same for blacks/Haitians/Cubans. I don''t know about others...Italians, pogrom-fleeing Jews.etc. So this anti-immigrant hysteria isn't new, just a new phase screeched out by the last group that got bashed but then made it thru to mainstream..

Yes I'm aware of the NINA signs and the Irish who arrived in the States as indentured servants are often compared to the plight of black people by those who apparently have no understanding of what the American institution of chattel slavery actually entailed. I myself am African American and have worked many a minimum wage job on my journey to a higher paying and more established career so you're comparing apples to oranges particularly since this has nothing to do with not wanting immigrants coming into the country, it's strictly the unlawful methods and entry which is at issue, at least for me. And the attitude of "I'm going to sit in your doorway until you concede and give me everything I want".

There are people here n the United States who live under the same threats of violence that many of the asylum seekers are alleging - from gangs and other criminals, violence from their domestic partners, and some it would appear from our police forces. And the mayor of Seattle Jenny Durkan just flew down to the border to see the situation firsthand after her city council just walked back a multi-million dollar head-tax levied against the most prosperous companies in the city of which Amazon and Starbucks top the list. The tax was proposed in order to generate money to fight the serious homeless problem that the city has and is getting worse. Seattle is known for having a generous program and leniency when it comes to dealing with the homeless so apparently they flock here. On the news the other day they were showing the police talking to one women in a "tent city mansion" (she had a really nice tent setup) who finally agreed to accept their offer of a plane ticket back to Kansas.
