Machete's are powerful weapons and are therefore banned in many jurisdictions.

Against unarmed civilians someone with a machete can hack apart about a dozen people before they themselves start to get muscle fatigue and can't swing the big blade anymore.

The only defense against a machete is some kind of furniture, or a skillfully wielded backpack.

In Japanese Shotokan kata #1 you are taught how to fight against someone with a stick or pole or big blade.

You need to get in close so they cannot hack at you.

Getting in close to a machete attacker is counter intuitive.

Once you get in close you can head-butt him while you grab his upper arms with your hands.

But you need to move in fast before the blade comes down on you.

So if you move into the attack that will surprise and thwart the attacker.
