I"ve lived in LA on a clear 8k per year, recently, too.. YOu just have to not pay rent and not commute. For most that means live in a van, RV, camper, or a tent. But its southern CA, and almost on the beach. It's not too hot and it's long ways from being cold. if you're stupid enough to pay an extra 20k per year, after tax, for commuting and a place to lay your head, that's your problem.

the best way to compete with cheap labor in China and India is too raise our wages even higher!! The liberal brain at work being dumber than dumb!!

Maybe the best way to have an economy which supports having any sort of middle class is not to design a situation where American workers HAVE to compete with workers in countries that have no middle class.
