this is a little story about a felon...convicted 9 times on felony charges, many of them illegal weapons charges who is finally going to jail for at least 7 years.....and yet, that is still not enough time....in Japan he would get 30 years...and that is how they keep gun murder at such a low rate....

Jersey City gang member gets extended 15-year prison term for gun charge - Gunmart Blog

Jersey City man convicted of a weapons offense was sentenced to 15 years in prison today due to his extensive criminal record, which includes nine criminal convictions.

Hopson would have faced five to 10 years in prison but he was eligible for an extended term of 10 to 20 years due to his prior convictions, which include multiple gun and drug crimes. Galis-Menendez also noted that Hopson has an extensive juvenile record.

In Japan it's illegal to have a gun to start with.

Here it's a "right", according to you nuts.

Hey, guy, we lock up 2 million people. We have another 7 million on probation or parole.

Meanwhile, Japan only locks up 69,000 people. They ban guns and women can walk safely at night

The latest Japanese Crime problem is old people committing crimes because they can't make ends meet on their pension.

Why Japan's Elderly Are Committing Crimes to 'Break Into Prison'

The reason for this choice is that life in Japan is simply unaffordable for retirees, says Hansen. According to Custom Products’ report, the state pension is 780,000 yen ($6,885) per year, but the cost of living is actually about 1,003,000 yen per year ($8,854), making it nearly impossible to get by on the pension alone.

It also helps that Japan’s prisons are quite comfortable, says Hansen. “Japan’s prisons aren’t like U.S. prisons. They’re nicer by far and they’re very safe, so you’re not going to have that fear of crime,” he says.

No moron...our criminal justice system is letting violent criminals out over and over again, and even violent felons, with multiple felonies and gun charges are getting out in under 3 years, and then going out and killing people....

Japan has a low gun crime rate because they have a non criminal culture....they have little crime in general, not just low gun crime...Thor criminals don't commit murdr that often in general, and their justice system puts gun criminals in jail for 30 years and holds the yakuza bosses responsible for the actions of the low level yakuza criminals.....something we can't do here....

Japan has an extensive underground criminal sub-culture.
The authorities look the other way as long as it stays underground.

I disagree with long sentences being the answer. While some people may change after serving a long enough sentence, that doesn't mean that everyone who serves a long sentence will change.

God bless you always!!!

It's not about change it's about keeping violent criminals off the street.
Lock em up till they need a walker to get around, will see how full of piss and vinegar they are then.

Changing them isn't the point....keeping them away from people is the point...they can't kill if they aren't around actual people....

Perhaps looking at the causes of crime might be an idea ?

The left here doesn't want to do that....single, teenage mothers raising generations of young males without fathers to teach them how to be adult men...is not something they want to address....

I agree which is why the name of this chat should say "Life in prison sentences..." instead of "Long prison sentences..." To me, saying "Long prison sentences..." makes its sound like the person will eventually have the ability to pick up where ever they leave off if they think that its still worth it.

God bless you always!!!

If you have a dog eat dog society then somebody is going to get bitten.
Perhaps you all need to be nicer to each other ?

Since you'll never change the mind of a career criminal, the only solution I see is to lock them up until they're so old they no longer have the energy to continue where they left off.

So being nice to criminals will stop them from committing crimes?:lmao:

Well you have the biggest prison population in the world and are one of the few western nations to still have capital punishment.
Perhaps some reflection on that may help you to a solution.

Great, so how does this stop people like my former business associate who got pissed off at his wife one night?

How does this stop the 3 year old who shoots his brother because he thinks the gun is a toy?

How does this stop the depressed kid who's girlfriend j ust dumped him from taking his own life?

How does this stop the mentally deranged person with no criminal record up to that point from shooting up a school or theater?
