Americans falsely assume that because most patents are filed in the USA, they're American inventions. In fact, more American patents are issued to foreigners than to Americans.

A physicist friend of mine who was born and bred in Canada, and who worked all of his adult life at the Chalk River Nuclear facility in Deep River is the holder 8 US patents. American Patent and Trade Mark protections are the strongest in the world, and they're enforceable almost anywhere in the world. That's why the world uses the US Patent office.
