Laura Ingalls Wilder's name pulled from library award over stereotypical in her popular books

It's ok. I know you won't admit you haven't read any of the books you're bloviating on about. No worries. At least I went and read one so I could judge for myself.

What people who want to ban historical authors and books that fail to meet todays PC standards don't understand..

Is that they are invaluable time capsules into people attitudes and behaviors for the time period they were written. ...

Not really. You really don't need to read badly written prose to realize people in 1870 were racist as all get out.

I'm amazed you weren't required to read the whole novel. I was never assigned part of a book.

I did have the misfortune to have to trudge through Orwell's 1984.

Here's the thing about HS literture. We make these kids trudge through dull, boring books that they have no interest in reading, and then wonder why they have no interest in reading. Why do we do this? Because teachers are taught to instruct from a dull, depressing book like 1984, where frankly, you get to the end of it, and feel kind of crappy.

what amazed me was that my nieces and nephews, when Harry Potter came out, couldn't wait for the next book. Kids wanting to read a book hundreds of pages long!

But, no, let's make them trudge through Laura Ingells talking about what it was like to pull water out of a well.

1984 was one heck of a book, that's why you hated it because it became true ( I picked it up at the local book store) i never read Harry potter or watched any of the movies it was just fantasy ...not in to that.

Oh. Saw no evidence of racism or bigotry in the first of her series.
Who cares if there was. Like Sunni Man said, it's a historical window into the culture and attitudes of that time period.
Apparently those who wish to remove Wilder's name from the award. Just how much can you read for comprehension?
Besides, Sunni Man hasn't read her novels, he doesn't know what he's talking about.

People have to understand and read books in the context of their times - not judge them by today's moral standards. Otherwise how many great books would be removed? Most I would think.
I don't believe anyone has suggested that in Wilder's case.
Progressives definitely want to rewrite history

Apparently much more than you. Context. Ever hear of it?

Yeah, escapism is bad, I guess.. that's what the booze is for in your case

Actually, I thought 1984 was overrated.

Here's my problem with the book. To enjoy a book, I have to be invested in the characters. Winston Smith is a pathetic little worm, you really have no investment in him at all, and aren't the least bit surprised when he cries like a little pussy when they threaten him with rats at the end.

It is far far too late for these fanatical punitive fools. THE LEGEND of Little House and Laura Ingalls Wilder is a monumental statue of respected, venerated his/her story greatness for a long long time already in the USA. The books and the show are vividly alive in the minds of many older USA citizens and this nonsense will only confuse the young. What this does is create a cognitive dissonance in schools and the internet that will further poison the innocence and creativity of young children in America. Way to go again far lefty nutcases!

Since I’m not big on idolatry, I don’t mind changing the name of an award to something that doesn’t glorify an individual, regardless of that person’s attitude toward others.

If the people in charge of this award sincerely believe Laura Ingalls Wilder was discriminatory in any way, they are absolutely right to change the name of the award.

Wishful thinking... kids don't really want to read 'Picking my nose on the Prairie".

The only reason why these crap books are still used in schools at all is the teachers are too lazy to learn to teach to the YA novels kids are ACTUALLY reading.

The Association for Library Service to Children (ALSC), a division of the American Library Association (ALA), has decided to name the award the
the Children's Literature Legacy Award.

The award was known as the Laura Ingalls Wilder Medal — first awarded to Wilder herself in 1954, three years before her death and the name remained until the change in 2018. Prior to Ingalls Wilder's passing, she along with her editor removed an offensive statement in one book and clarified it...OK the new title of the award has a ring of prestige and classiness. Not a problem. The problem NOW is that the awful media once again is on to this like predators and their "news" articles are shallow and disrespectful to the outstanding writing by Laura Ingalls Wilder. The Little House series of books are a rich time capsule of real pioneer experiences and that includes honest observations of the attitudes and possible fears and prejudices back in those days. In one part of the books, a young Laura asks her mother why people are afraid of Native peoples, in effect questioning the prejudices of not only a family member, but also an elder, in the precocious way of a curious child. In some ways these books are better for adults to read than children as many of the topics displaying life on the frontier are very real portrayals of the complicated world in those times. Most likely the Osage Nation will feel some relief at this dropping of her title, because the truth is Pa Ingalls had his family squat on Indian land during one period of their travels. The Ingalls women were ahead of their times as great writers in a time when most women did not have such careers. They are also related to the President Franklin Delano Roosevelt through their ancestors.

Laura Ingalls Wilder's name is set to be removed from a major children's book award after concerns were raised about the "Little House on the Prairie" author's depiction of certain races in the early-to-mid 20th century.

As you leftist Hitlers use to laugh at all the other pro Trump people getting their sites shut down, or gettng banned as you watch people getting kicked off sites because your cowardly asses reported them well all that time you thougght you were so specail cause your not a Trump supporter , welll it kinda looks like BLOW BACK IS GONNA be easting you hypocirtes alive bhaahah.
That's too bad, I think. I loved those books and I don't remember anything about other races in them. With or without the award, I hope kids still enjoy them.

Laura Ingalls Wilder was not a racist. She was a great writer and historian that truthfully portrayed the attitudes and events of adults through the eyes of an innocent child.

Harry potter is for little kids with fucked up imaginations...
1984 was required reading when I was a kid

I don't know, I find them really great. Something that can get a kid interested in reading. I remember my neices and nephews read the first one, and they couldn't wait for the next one to come out. Getting a kid to read a 600 page book is pretty awesome.

On the other hand, 1984 is a depressing book written by a failed socialist who had no faith in humanity. His protagonist is a worm and you really don't feel anything when they break him.

You missed the point of the book, 1984 proves how fucked up socialism is... it destroys everything it touches... absolutely
