Kerry: Israel agrees to round the clock surveillance at Temple Mount, committed to status quo

US secretary of state: Netanyahu has agreed to 24-7 video surveillance in Jerusalem's al-Aqsa compound, Israeli officials and Waqf authorities soon to meet to discuss meeting tensions.

US Secretary of State John Kerry said on Saturday that Israel and Jordan have agreed on steps aimed at reducing tensions at a holy site in Jerusalem that have fanned Israeli-Palestinian violence. Kerry said Netanyahu had expressed a commitment to continue enforcing the status quo, which says only Muslims may pray at the compound, while non-Muslims may only visit.

Noting the video monitoring, Kerry said it would provide "comprehensive visibility and transparency, and that could really be a game-changer in discouraging anybody from disturbing the sanctity of this holy site."

"Israel will continue to enforce its long-standing policy on religious worship ... at the Temple Mount/Haram al-Sharif, including the fundamental fact that it is Muslims who pray on the Temple Mount/Haram al-Sharif, and non-Muslims who visit," Kerry added.

"I hope that based on these conversations we can finally put to rest some of the false assumptions, perceptions" about the holy site, Kerry said. "Those perceptions are stoking the tensions and fueling the violence and it is important for us to end the provocative rhetoric and start to change the public narrative that comes out of those false perceptions."

It should be noted that Israel strongly opposed a recent French initiative to place international observers at the Temple Mount, a proposal that led to the French ambassador being reprimanded by the Foreign Ministry in Jerusalem. (too funny, reprimaned , what did he have to do stand in the corner!!)

I'm sure the zealots will have a fit.

Sounds like he wants the truth to be seen on video, rather than someone's biased interpretation of the truth. Smart.

Pretty hard for him to say no to this , isn't it, since Jordan is in charge of the mosque. Yes should be very interesting.

They should have never given control of the mosque to the Arabs after they were defeated. We have Moshe Dayan to thank for that. Although he was a national hero, he was also delusional liberal who thought by giving Arabs control of the mosque, it would lead to coexistence with the savages.

Level the mosque and take away what they're fighting for. This is not about land nor has it ever been. It's a religious war, anybody who thinks otherwise is a fool.

Level the mosque and get it over with.

My concience is clear. How many churches and synagogues have Palestinian animals set on fire? Gentlemen, start your bulldozers.

Why as all it will do is show the Palestinians gearing up for more violence and getting their weapons ready for the next fight.

He will have been told that next time he will be expelled from Israel and not granted diplomatic immunity. The last thing a diplomat wants is to explain why they are no longer acceptable to the host nation

How many have they flattened all over the world so they could build mosques on consecrated ground ?

Kerry spends waaaaaaaaaay too much time thinking about Israel.

He spends too much time jet setting, same with Biden, this could of been done via phone or Skype , I realize some meeting needs to be done in person, but aren't they wasting energy flying around the globe.

Your right Jordan should step in , which they did, since they are overseers of the temple mount.

Yes go ahead and level the mosque, see what happens, oh right, Israel has nukes.

Have they, can you prove this conclusively. Now what would happen if they did flatten the mosque that is a fake as it was built in the 1300's anyway. The muslims would be put on the spot and would be worried in case the next place to go would be the black stone in Mecca. The Palestinians would cry because they would have no reason to keep on fighting for something that is useless.

And they agreed that the Jews could have access to the Temple mount at any time. It is the Palestinians that are causing the trouble AGAIN and turning on the Jews violently

Level the mosque, there won't be a need for surveillance.
