SNL has a reputation of pushing the envelope regarding attacks on republicans and traditional conservatives and even evangelical Christians (but never liberals) since it became established as an entertainment icon and a social entity. It didn't matter who SNL offended and hurt on the political right or even how many SNL performers died young while engaging in (and promoting?) prolific drug abuse. The ironic thing is that while SNL railed out against societal mores and conventional thinking, in the long run it was really about corporate profits. They used to get away with this stuff but they can't get away with it anymore since the right wing is fighting back.
