John Wayne obscure interview quote: I don't feel guilty that 10 generations ago people were slaves

I'm proud of the United States for leading the way in banning slavery. The United States has led the world in freeing more people than anyone in the history of civilization.

fer sure; the US built a nation on the backs of slaves, then we told the rest of the world, you can't do that, like we did.

kinda like nukes; the US has them in spades but we certainly don't want anyone else to have them.

We's funny like dat.
Bull, the USA didn't build a nation with slaves. Slaves were a small work force in one section of the Nation and one industry. What total horse shit.
Yeah, it's funny, huh. Tell us how many slaves built NY City, Chicago, Detroit, etc, and how many slaves built the railroads. Idiot.

Slavery in America started in 1619.

Though it is impossible to give accurate figures, some historians have estimated that 6 to 7 million black slaves were imported to the New World during the 18th century alone, depriving the African continent of some of its healthiest and ablest men and women.

Though the U.S. Congress outlawed the African slave trade in 1808, the domestic trade flourished, and the slave population in the U.S. nearly tripled over the next 50 years. By 1860 it had reached nearly 4 million, with more than half living in the cotton-producing states of the South.

Okay, Einstein. Tell us what the slaves were doing to build the nation. Go ahead.

A Playboy interview with John Wayne, one of Hollywood's staunchest conservatives, has recently resurfaced on Twitter. "I don't feel guilty about the fact that five or 10 generations ago these people were slaves," he said about African Americans

‘I believe in white supremacy’: John Wayne’s notorious 1971 Playboy interview goes viral on Twitter
There is an airport named after him in Ca.

There’s also a statue of him

Wayne's views are no different than the pork in our White House. Interesting tid bit: John Wayne died with 40 lbs of undigested red meat in his colon. Not essential to the convo, but it seems he died in a lot of pain, unable to eat solid food, b/c of stomach cancer. KARMA

There is a ruckus in California over John Wayne Airport and I bet they will change it back to Orange County Airport. No telling what will happen to John Wayne's bronze statue in front of John Wayne Airport. John Wayne threatened to kick Dennis Hopper's ass which he said in the 71 Playboy interview. edit: I think but not sure that Johnny Carson bought John Wayne's yacht.

the nation was built by the people with the brains
and the Asians built the railroads which were of greater importance than cotton

John Wayne (Marion Morrison) was bald and gay.

In Frank Zappa’s autobiography, he recalls a brief encounter with John Wayne in early 1966: Zappa says that while hanging out at the entrance to a nightclub in Hollywood, a drunk Wayne came shambling out. He stopped and stared goggle-eyed at Zappa and shouted “I remember you from Egypt, and you blew me!!” Wayne had a lifestyle on his boat in Newport Harbor which was known among the neighbors.

John Wayne wore high heels. Even though he was over 6 feet tall. He wanted to look taller so all his cowboy boots had 3 inch heels and he stole his iconic walk from the great stuntman, Yakima Canutt.

Also he fought in ALL the wars, except the real ones.

He wore a hundred military uniforms but never served a day in his life.

Other white Hollywood actors like Jimmy Stewart, Henry Fonda, Clark Gable and Tyrone Power signed up and risked their lives fighting in WW2. Wayne did everything he could to avoid serving the country that made him a rich and successful person. Jimmy Stewart in particular, done 20 combat missions in B-24s over Europe, a combat tour he had to repeatedly request, and his 3 Flying Crosses.

Jimmy Stewart was about that life.

The lengths Wayne went to avoid military service and the stories that he and the studios told to cover it up are pretty astounding given his persona.

So the bottom line is John Wayne is America’s favorite Draft Dodger, before Dodging the Draft was cool. He set the stage for so many Republican Chickenhawks (Trump)

Also his 3rd wife (Pilar Pillet) was not even white

I knew there was some kind of reason I never liked John Wayne.

You're an idiot. Slaves didn't build the ships, the railroads, the cities, the tunnels, the bridges, the skyscrapers, the war machines, etc. Slaves picked cotton. Idiot.

John Wayne came from a different era. Born in 1907, he had views that were not untypical for his time. Doesn't make them right of course, but I see no reason to make a big deal of it now since the interview has been in the public domain for nearly 40 years.

The only thing I did not know until I read the article is that John Wayne had multiple deferments to avoid service in WWII. Personally, the deferments were more of a shock to me than Wayne's Playboy interview comments. I mean nearly everyone was into service of country back then. My dad enlisted at 14 to fight in the war for heavens's sake...to hear my grandmother tell the story was a trip....but I digress.
Very true

John Wayne made war movies making him look like a hero while stars like Clark Gable and Jimmy Stewart flew combat missions

He did not feel guilty that ten generations before, blacks were slaves
He also didn’t feel guilty that in his own generation, blacks were lynched, denied the vote and forced to the back of the bus

Any successful nation is built from a successful economy, period.
What is one of the best ways to build a thriving economy? CHEAP LABOR.
The slaves in the new world aka AmerKKKa had a HUGE economic impact on the growing & thriving economy.
The profits from the tobacco, sugar, rice, hemp, cotton, and other agribusiness that utilized slaves were a HUGE factor in building the economic engine of the US.
The MILLIONS upon MILLIONS of slaves in the US for nearly 250 most certainly had a huge impact on building the economy of the US aka building a nation.

YOU seem to be stuck on the word 'build' but that is merely an indication of a kindergarten level mentality.
That is the indication of someone that sees a literal translation, or understanding of a subject.
It reminds me of one of those evangelicals that BELIEVES their 'God' made the universe in SIX days, about 7,000 years ago.
Last I checked the consensus is our spinning rock is about 4 BILLION years old.
It also reminds me of the typical mentality of a Trump voter; very 'black & white' thinking aka barely thinking.

Now, who is the idiot? Go look in a mirror.

I agree with your statement 100%!

In December 1941, John Wayne was 34 years old and had several children. He was also under contract to a major movie studio, so joining the military would have resulted him being sued for breach of contract. He has always said that his greatest regret in life was that he never served.

He did do some USO work for a few months.

One has to remember that unlike other countries in WWII the US never had to scrape down to the bottom when it came to military service. We had plenty of guys 18-24 for military service. Compare that to the British who were reaching the bottom of their reserves, or worse, the Germans who were resorting to 50 year old men and 14 year old boys by the end.

Other nations just ended it and moved on
