There are core beliefs to both liberalism and conservatism and we often confuse the means to achieve these core beliefs as part of the ideology; they are not. For example, the size of government is not a core belief, but what the government does, appeals to the core beliefs of one side or the other. Check the Declaration for some liberal core beliefs.

There is no connection between the founding fathers & modern politicians. To suggest so is laughable

Well, it was a lot more in common than you think. Ought to see how the fights between Thomas Jefferson and John Adams came about and how that led to parties. Something that they had opposed, but it inevitably separated out.

Their fights were far more similar than you would think.

the core of liberalism today is cognitive dissonance, that's why people call it a mental disorder. get right down to it, though, there's no absolute monarchy in united states so there's really no fixed point of reference to measure who is the liberal and who is the conservative when it comes to the concentration of power. to be conservative at the federal level means to be liberal at the state level. maybe you should try being republicans and democrats again, instead. that makes a lot more sense.
