March jobs report: Hiring slows, Unemployment falls to 8.2% - Apr. 6, 2012

Hiring slowed dramatically in March, clouding optimism about the strength of the recovery.

Employers added 120,000 jobs in the month, the Labor Department reported Friday, falling far short of economists' expectations.

The U.S. lost 4.3 million jobs in President Obama's first 13 months in office. Track his progress since then. The number marked a significant slowdown in hiring from February, when the economy added 240,000 jobs.

"It's discouraging that job growth was half of what it had been the previous month," said Christine Owens, executive director of the National Employment Law Project.

Job growth of around 120,000 is just about enough to keep up with population growth, and is therefore more like "treading water" than a major improvement, Owens said.

Meanwhile, the unemployment rate fell to 8.2% as the labor force shrank by 164,000 workers, mostly due to white women leaving the job market.
Economists attributed part of the hiring slowdown to an unseasonably warm winter that boosted job growth in January and February. The Labor Department adjusts its data to account for seasonal trends, and the warm weather may have distorted those calculations.

I listened to Kudlow on the radio for a bit this afternoon.

He indicated that growth is about 2.4% under Obama post recession trough.

Under Reagan it was 6% for the two years following.

We simply are not strong enough to generate the jobs.

President Obama is doing a great job.....or ruining this country.

Time to send him packing.

It's too bad the rightwing nuts on USMB reflexively say every job report sucks, no matter what is in it.

Otherwise someone with a brain might think you people actually have something intelligent to contribute on the subject.

Maybe at some point you guys should decide to lower the rate through employment, and not reducing the work force.

What is the amount of jobs no longer in existence? 2 million?

It is greater then that. If we start at the maximum participation rate on record.

More jobs have been created in the last six months than in eight years of the Bush debacle

Then we would be different from you.

But in this case, I think most everyone agrees this is not a good sign. However, it is just one month...we'll see what the trends look like.

But, the case was made today that even the current trend is still to low to think of this as a recovery.

This was mean for people with brains. I'm sorry to inform you that you don't qualify.

And how many were lost ?

Not that it matters, but since we are throwing around useless information.

Growth is still at 2.4%. It needs to be around 4%.

Obama is the democrats Reagan (as per dickweed Chris).

Oh, wait, growth was about 6% following the bottoming out of the recession in 82/83.

I guess he isn't after all.

All information is useless to Republicans if it doesn't support their zany world view. Speaking of 6%. That's how many scientists admit to being Republican.

Isn't it funny that most scientists don't live in the real world. They sit around in lab coats hyperfocused on some small piece of the puzzle with no clue as to whether the work they are doing is useful or not.

ENGINEERS on the other hand, have to translate the work of scientists into economically capable commercial operations. The definition of engineering has the word ecnoomy in it.

Most engineers I've worked with...and that is hundreds....are conservative.

I'll take the real world guys against the Ivory Tower types any day of the week.

But, your are probably a failed scientist. From the looks of things, you could not it past first semester chemistry.

That's not saying much considering Bush had record low unemployment rates throughout his terms. Kind of hard to "create jobs" when everyone is already working.

The downfall of economy happened once Dems took over Congress and Bush became a lame duck, so the last two years of his term are all on Dems.

That's an interesting claim, given that Clinton had UE at 4.1% or lower for the entire year of 2000,

and Bush never saw that number or lower for 8 years.

Clinton didn't have a problem creating jobs and had lower unemployment than Bush
