Jakarta attacks: at least six dead in series of 'suicide bombings' – rolling report

At least six killed in attacks
This latest report is from Reuters:

Militants launched a gun and bomb assault killing at least six people in the centre of the Indonesian capital on Thursday, police said, in an attack that followed a threat by Islamic State fighters to put the country in their “spotlight”.

Media said six bombs went off and a Reuters witness saw three dead people and a gunfight going on. One blast was in a Starbucks cafe and security forces were later seen entering the building.

Police said they suspected a suicide bomber was responsible for at least one of the blasts and up to 14 militant gunmen were involved in the attack, Metro TV reported.

“The Starbucks cafe windows are blown out. I see three dead people on the road. There has been a lull in the shooting but someone is on the roof of the building and police are aiming their guns at him,” said a Reuters photographer.

Indonesia has been on edge in recent weeks over the threat posed by Islamist militants and counter-terrorism police have launched a crackdown on people with suspected links to Islamic State.

“We have previously received a threat from Islamic State that Indonesia will be the spotlight,” police spokesman Anton Charliyan told reporters. But he said police did not know who was responsible.

He said three policemen and three civilians had been killed.

Maybe not:

No indication of Isis involvement - intelligence chief
There were no indications that Islamic State militants were behind a gun and bomb attack in the Indonesian capital, Jakarta, on Thursday, the head of the national intelligence agency has told Reuters.

“This is definitely terrorism but there are no indications yet that it’s ISIS related,” said Sutiyoso.

this is a surprising twist of events considering guns are so highly regulated

that there are no gun shops in the whole country

3 of the 10 were suicide bombers, apparently some snipers too. Some are holed up in a building somewhere. Jakarta is going into lockdown.

What a wonderful world we live in.

Obama says their just guys on the back of a pick up truck, these were probably just Lone Wolves, nothing to do with Islam. Hell, the real threat comes from reckless speech edging on violence from angry conservatives.

Soooooo, even under heavy regulation & total ban on guns............AND THEY STILL HAVE SHOOTINGS

ISIS smuggled them in on the backs of their pickup trucks

islamist parties led by hamzah haz feared lessening of firearm laws after the bali bombigs

would encourage non muslims to overthrow islam in indonesia

which is pretty much how and why gun control works/ exists

A series of bomb blasts have rocked the Indonesian capital, Jakarta, and there is continuing gunfire and reports of further explosions on the streets.
At least six people have been killed by the blasts, which hit several locations including a shopping centre.
Police say they believe more than a dozen attackers were involved. Some are still at large and have been exchanging fire with security forces.
President Joko Widodo has called for calm but condemned the "act of terror".
"We all are grieving for the fallen victims of this incident, but we also condemn the act that has disturbed the security and peace and spread terror among our people," he said.
There is no indication yet of who might be behind the assault. Indonesia has been attacked by Islamist militant groups in the past and was on high alert over the new year period after threats from the so-called Islamic State.
Images from the scene showed bodies lying on the road as well as seriously injured people being carried away. BBC Indonesian reporter, Jerome Wirawan, who is at the scene, said police had cordoned off the area.

I agree. Just 10-14 lone wolves :)
They also had grenades, apparently.

instead of gun shops in Indonesia

some civilians may obtain firearms through the chief of police

at the polices discretion

But it's the same ignorance and hate from the right, the same ridiculous bigotry, the same composition fallacy.

Here's a map, in case anyone here is familiar with this part of the world:

There were several large explosions right across the city - with reports that at least three suicide bombers targeted a Starbucks cafe at a busy shopping centre near the presidential palace.

Three other blasts were reportedly heard in the Cikni, Silpi and Kuningan neighbourhoods, near the Pakistan and Turkish embassies.

Police said a gun battle with attackers also took place inside a cinema at the retail complex.

Tri Seranto, a security guard at a bank, said he saw at least five attackers, three of them suicide bombers, who entered the cafe and blew themselves up, one by one.

Security forces stormed the building, and gunfire could be heard more than an hour after the explosions.

Mr Seranto said the two other attackers, who were carrying handguns, entered a nearby police post from where he heard gunfire.

Up to 14 militants are believed to have been behind the assault, and there are fears some managed to flee the scene and are on the run.
