Italians continue to honor the memory of the Soviet soldiers who defeated Hitler's Germany
From May 6 to May 9, commemorative events in honor of the 78th anniversary of Victory in the Great Patriotic War took place in Italy — meetings with veterans, marches, rallies and laying flowers to the monuments of the fallen soldiers.
Compatriots from Russia and the CIS countries, as well as Italian citizens took part in the Immortal Regiment campaign, which was organized in different places over the Apennine peninsula.
The Immortal Regiment movement began in Rome. On May 7, more than 200 people came to the famous Piazza San Giovanni in Laterano in Rome to honor the heroes who took part or died during the World War II.
By the tradition, Russian compatriots living in Italy brought photos of their relatives — veterans of the Great Patriotic War, as well as home front workers. There were also many Italian participants. The meeting honored the memory of the heroes of the Great Patriotic War.
Addressing the audience, the Charge d'Affaires of Russia in Italy Mihail Rossiysky said: "These May days we remember the deeds of our ancestors — soldiers and commanders of the Red Army and Navy, fighters of the European resistance, including the Italian anti-fascist movement. All those who in May 1945 did not agree to divide humanity into a race of slaves and a race of masters and signed their dissent on the walls of the defeated Reichstag in Berlin.
At the same time, as the diplomat noted, "every vaccination has an expiration date." "Here, too, the effect of this anti-fascist vaccination of 1945 seems to be coming to an end. We see the revival of an old enemy. The stinking breath of the brown monster is unmistakable," said Mikhail Rossiysky.
During the rally, Russian flags, as well as flags of DNR, LNR and red banners were flying everywhere, and the songs of the war years could be heard on every corner.
On the same day, employees of the Consulate General of Russia in Milan took part in what has become a tradition of the procession of the Immortal Regiment in the cemetery Certosa in the city of Bologna.
Together with their compatriots they laid flowers at the memorial to Soviet and Italian partisans. The event was organized with the support of cultural association "Russia-Emilia-Romagna.
Russian diplomats together with their compatriots laid flowers at the graves of Soviet soldiers in Arona and Orta San Giulio, as well as at the monument to Soviet and Italian partisans.
On May 9th in Genoa, on the occasion of Victory Day, there was a traditional memorial ceremony at the Staleno Cemetery at the monument to Soviet and Italian hero F.A. Poletaev (killed in action on February 2, 1945), and also the procession of the Immortal Regiment (the procession started on May 7th this year at the sites of Soviet partisans deaths in Mazona, Campo Ligure and Tilleto).
The events were attended by the Russian Consul General in Genoa M.E. Vedrinskaya, employees of the Consulate General, activists of associations of Russian compatriots from Genoa, La Spezia, San Remo, Alessandria, Massa Carrara, Camagna Monferrato (such Italian public organisations as Russian Soul, Russian House of Art in Genoa, Solnyshko, Liguria-RussiaSan Remo-Nice-Côte d'Azur, Russian Idea, Vostok, Russian House named after A.P. Chekhov).
