The only problem is you guys think it's something that can be controlled.

So let's review. Before you guys started panicking over "the border" Mexicans would come up here as migrants, do a little work for a few months, and go home and live very well. Not a problem.

Then you all worried a SMALL amount of illegals stayed here long term. So your boy Ronnie Reagan offered Amnesty to some of them, with increased "Border security". That didn't really stop people from crossing the border, it just made it more of a hassle. As long as there are people willing to do jobs Americans won't do, you are going to have border crossings. Except now, more of them were planning to stay long-term. No point having to do the hassle of sneaking across the border every year when you could do it once.

So, all the hyperventilating about the wall didn't really help. What did help was increased employment security such as E-verify. So now what you are seeing is people abusing the asylum system to get work papers. And some people are legitimately in need of asylum because even we admit the countries they are escaping from are awful.

The problem is, of course, that the nativists don't want even legitimate cases of immigrating. Trump didn't really reduce illegal immigration, which spiked over where it was under Obama. He did decrease legal immigration by cutting back on the number of H1B visas and making it harder to apply for asylum.
