Because of the way the war was conducted. We tried to win the hearts and minds of the people. What needed to be done was to pound our way clear with air strikes so that they fled before we got there.

And the oil fields arent difficult to rebuild. The pumps are not high tech.

We did bomb the hell out of the military. We sustained many of those casualties in battle. Even if we'd flattened Baghdad, we still would have incurred thousands of casualties.

The ONLY thing that matters in the middle east are the oil fields. It's a fantasy to think we could take and control the oil fields and infrastructure without engaging in heavy casualties. We would be under constant attack.

But Trump offers easy answers. And people want to easy answers to complex questions.

First, you'd have to dislodge them. You can't do that from the air. You need boots on the ground. That will mean many casualties. Next, when you capture the oil fields, you have to protect them. You will jihadis coming from all over the middle east, and they will constantly bombard the lines from the periphery. Finally, it's not just about the oil fields. It isn't worth anything if you can't get it out of the ground to refineries and transported out of the country. That means protecting pipelines, storage and gathering facilities, etc. And America would do it all alone, because no country on earth would support what would be viewed as an illegal theft of resources. Why would any country put troops in harm's way so that the United States could seize oil fields to pay it's own citizens? And that's assuming that Americans want to get involved in any more wars in the middle east.

Of course, America could seize the oil fields if we wanted to. But we can't without incurring significant cost, either in lives or in money.

It is an incredibly dumb idea. Yet, this passes as credible amongst a portion of the population.
