You won´t believe that but it is actually true: The price of electricity in Ukraine is currently 3,8 US-Cent per kilowatt hour. How can war-torn Ukraine maintain such a low price while well-fed western countries suffocate their economies with extreme prices? The price in Ukraine will rise after the heating season but not a level anywhere near European prices.

Household energy prices are subsidized by the government and they have a lot of nuclear capacity. It may not be so cheap if they end the subsidies.

Yes, that is what the news also says. They should do it in our countries too.
You all became highly dependent on Russian natural gas and then decided to stop buying russian natural gas. Kind of cutting off your nose to spite your face.

Anyway, the problem with subsidies is where does the money come from. My city subsidizes industries by giving them lower electric prices. That money comes from charging the rest of us more.

The Russian gas was very cheap. One seventh of the spot market´s price. It was treason to throw that away. But that is not the sole reason for our prices. It is also the green energy agenda, taxes and corporate greed.

And what was the reason the Russians were selling the gas so cheap?

It was the result of decades of a developing relationship between both countries. A result of decades of reliable business partners doing business. It started way back in the 70´s. Now all thrown away by a party that campaigned with "security of supply".

So, you think Russia supplied its biggest European buyer at 'dumping' prices just because it was a good economic strategy?

Interesting, in what day of a week a NATO member can become a friend for Russia.
Germany and Russia were on friendly terms despite the fact that both countries were and are members of different military pacts. It even started in the Cold War, as I already told you. Another reason could be that former German Chancellor Schröder is a personal friend of Putin.

Yeah, it started with Chancellor Shmidt somewhere in 1970s. Though, not sure those relations could be called 'friendly'. But whatever.

But those friendly relations came to a quite logical conclusion. You can't be in a military block that deems Russia as a main threat, and at the same time buy Russian resources on friendly prices making your industry dependent on them. Either.. or..
