"America is the greatest country in the world"

or things to that effect, so profoundly out-of-touch they shouldn't even be allowed to run for President? It's a fine applause line, but America isn't the great anything in the world. We don't come in the top 10 in any area (except areas you don't want to lead the rest in as with citizens imprisoned and the like.)

Shouldn't somoene trying to become the next President have a firm grasp of reality and instead say something like,

"I'll make America great again."

IMHO, the problem is that none of the candidates actually care about what we think about them. I mean, they use catchy slogans and fine words which in fact mean nothing. So it doesn't really matter what they say.
Though I would love to see a person who offers to make America great again - and has a real plan to do that. A plan that he is ready to share.

America is the greatest country in the world. That's why so many people are trying so hard to get here.

A politician should be promising to make America even greater than it already is.

A candidate who does not say America is the greatest country in the world needs to figure out which one is and move there immediately.

Could argue it the other way as well, by running, you're showing how you want to get into office TO MAKE things better.

False dilemma.
America is the greatest country ion the world. But it can be even better than it is now. Especially by reversing the policies of at least the last 8 years.

It isnt that.
America is the best country because it is the only one that recognizes that individuals as individuals have rights for no other reason than they exist. It is the best country because it affords (until recently) the ability of infinite upward mobility regardless of origin. It takes generations for someone to become a Frenchman or a German. An american can be someone fresh off the boat with a green card. It is a country that others turn to in times of need. Any natural disaster in the world is followed with announcements of American aid. No one looks to China to supply aid across the world. It is a country that has fought for principle, even at personal loss. We value genius and excellence over title and lineage. Americans are naturally optmistic people and we attract optimists from all over, people who believe tomorrow will be better than today. In Europe they know tomorrow will be worse. Next year even more so. Not so here.
That is the greatness of America.
