NASA congratulated India for making history after becoming the first nation to land on the moon's south pole, while Russia and China have stayed silent.
India has accomplished what the rest have failed - Russia attempted a similar feat last week, but its spacecraft crashed into the lunar surface, and NASA and China are years away.
The Southeast Asian nation's Chandrayann-3 made a soft landing at 8:34 am ET Wednesday, sparking cheers and applause among the space scientists watching in the southern Indian city of Bengaluru.
The craft, which means 'moon vehicle' in Hindi and Sanskrit, landed on the South Pole - beating the US, China and Russia to the unmapped region.
The South Pole is an uncharted territory that scientists believe could hold vital reserves of frozen water and precious elements.
Indian Space Research Organization's (ISRO) successful mission marks its emergence as a space power as the government looks to spur investment in private space launches and related satellite-based businesses.
Chandrayaan-3 is expected to remain functional for two weeks, running a series of experiments, including a spectrometer analysis of the mineral composition of the lunar surface to determine if there is water ice.

Congratulations, they are only 54 years behind America.
And, they are only sending a probe that is only supposed to last for two weeks.
But it is a good step forward for science.
We should have Lunar probes just like we have Martian probes.
India should be spending their money on their huge poverty problem and their sanitation problems.

You might not have noticed but we have been going to the Moon since the 1960s.

I congratulate them. That crap ain't easy. It really is rocket science and a bunch of other sciences also. If they did it like here, it was with parts from the lowest bidder, too.

That must REALLY gall the Russians! I mean India is DIRT POOR and they just landed a vessel on the Moon, the South Pole region which is one of the hardest places to land at as part of the heavily cratered Lunar Highlands, just days after Russia tried and CRASHED! :auiqs.jpg:

All Governments operate as wealthy when certain matters arise . To stereotype all of India as being " Dirt Poor " is embarrassingly out of date .Regardless , and to allow me to reign in my Critical Thinking , is there hard proof that the Russian craft actually crashed? If it was on the Dark Side, how do we know whether the truth was told or are there reasons to think that a private joint operation will now take place? I can think of several reasons why that could benefit both India and The Federation and leave China and the US trailing. Musing .

When you have a segment of your population living in sewage and disease and filth in cobbled together doghouses made out of refuse, I call that DIRT POOR.

Well, the Russians are notoriously resistant to admitting failure, and they are the ones who should know if they crashed.

Well, you could always go there and check. :smoke:

You totally miss the point . The "segment" you quote are not the money holders or the scientists . Stop being perverse just for the sake of it . You might as well characterise America as being DIRT POOR based on the shit hole which is San Francisco .

Once we've set up the lunar colony, we can look forward to fast food stands with American, Chinese and Indian cuisine. As for the garbage dumps, we can just set them up on the opposite side of the moon, where we can't see them.
