The Mann Hockey Stick graph, long disputed and already dismissed, yet still being utilized by the Flat Earth Warmers as evidence of man made global warming, receives yet another blow.

Behold this visual, showing clearly the outright fabrication of "unprecedented" warming that has been repeated over and over and over again for nearly two decades.

Man made global warming is a lie - and that lie is now facing the light of truth and hopefully, a return to common sense environmentalism...

So who am I to believe, James Watt, or the Natianal Acedemy of Sciences?

NAS hockey stick report | Grist

So the big climate news today is the release of a report by the National Academy of Sciences (coverage from: AP; NYT; WaPo; MSNBC; NPR; Boston Globe). It's being spun every which way, but at its root it's (yet another) confirmation of basic global warming science.

You've probably heard of the climate "hockey stick." It's a graph from a study led by Penn State's Michael Mann that shows global average temperatures sharply spiking in recent years. A couple of guys named Stephen McIntyre and Ross McKitrick -- a statistician and an economist, respectively -- took issue with the study and claimed that Mann had cherry-picked his data and his statistical tools to produce the result he wanted.

In recent years, the hockey stick has become a cause célèbre among right-wing global warming denialists. It is mentioned with mind-numbing regularity by every crank given the keys to an op-ed page, and has become something of a white whale-style obsession for the Mayor of Cranktown, Sen. James Inhofe.

Mann and his fellow researchers, you may recall, were the guys that got a bullying letter from Rep. Joe Barton last year demanding a detailed accounting of their research. After Barton's ham-handed intimidation, Rep. Sherwood Boehlert got fed up and commissioned the NAS to assess the study once and for all -- so that, if nothing else, Inhofe and Barton would STFU.

The report from NAS today reaffirms the long-standing consensus of the climate science community: Mann's analytical tools were flawed and there are lingering uncertainties about early temperature records, but the basic finding -- that temperature has recently spiked, and the globe is warmer than any time in 1000 years -- is likely sound and has gained support from numerous other scientists and studies.

More Hockey Stick data.

Can you make a hockey stick without tree rings?

Can you make a hockey stick without tree rings?
When "Climategate" first broke, I noted the skeptic preoccupation with one tiny piece of climate science while neglecting the full weight of direct observations of current global warming. That tiny piece is paleoclimatology: the reconstruction of past temperature. However, upon reflection, I may have oversold the skeptic position. The focus is on one particular method of that tiny piece: tree ring proxies. In the field of paleoclimatology, there are a variety of independent methods to determine past temperature changes: tree rings, ice cores, lake sediments, boreholes, stalagmites, etc. What do these independent methods find?

Surface temperature changes send thermal waves underground, cooling or warming the subterranean rock. Boreholes can be used to measure these changes. In Huang 2000, underground temperature measurements were examined from over 350 bore holes in North America, Europe, Southern Africa and Australia. Borehole reconstructions aren't able to give annual or even decadal variation, yielding only century-scale trends. What they find is that the 20th century is the warmest of the past five centuries. This provides independent confirmation that the Earth is warming dramatically (the blue line is the instrumental record).

I suggest you get up to speed Old Rocks - the Mann Hockey Stick was always a complete farce - the earth has been both warmer and cooler than present day - long before man-made CO2 was a fabricated agenda-driven issue...

Oh - and please check out the references at the end of the clip.

Good Boy...

We already know to whom you give your blind allegance, tovarich.

We already know that you are a clueless troll with no research abilities at all.
I've done lots of research and posted lots of links to information...All of which you've dismissed out-of-hand because they don't fit into your puny and myopic Stalinist political agenda.

So, as it is with your butt boy Chrissy, all you're worthy of is regular napalming.

Global Warming - The Hockey Stick

Temperature Variations in Past Centuries and the so-called "Hockey Stick"
RealClimate.org
This page from RealClimate gives a brief but excellent summary of the science behind the hockey stick, with citations to a few of the most important papers on the subject. RealClimate (RealClimate) was created by several leading climate scientists, all well published contributors in their fields in their fields as an antidote to the many ideologically driven global warming “information” sites and blogs that have flooded the Internet in recent years, nearly all of which are created and funded by industry and other special interests.
Surface Temperature Reconstructions for the Last 2,000 Years
National Research Council, 2006
When 3 papers by industry-funded consultants managed to get published despite obvious methodological flaws several Far-Right members of Congress (most notably Republicans Joe Barton and James Inhofe) tried to launch an investigation of Mann and his colleagues in an attempt to bolster the credibility of the industry-funded work (the journal Climate Research which had published two of them was discovered to have problems with its peer-review process and several of its editors resigned in protest). The National Research Council (NRC) arm of the National Academy of Sciences was commissioned to do an in-depth review the hockey stick research. This is their final report. Not surprisingly, the NRC concluded that the science behind the hockey stick was solid and that there were obvious flaws in the industry-funded work—in full support of mainstream climate scientists. They did however have some criticisms regarding the manner in which some of the evidence had been handled along the way by all parties.

You post a source (realclimate) that is itself implicated in the climategate scandal?

How about you shuffle over and ask OJ if her really killed those two people?

Good lord...

Not everyone knows that Real Climate is Michael Mann's pet project....But I be Old Rocksinthehead does and uses it anyways.

Rocks is either very ignorant - or so up the ass of the flat-earth warmer mantra independent thought is no longer possible for him...

He already admitted that he's not interested in making an independent analysis of the information and coming to his own conclusion (don't have acces to the link right now, but I'll pass it along).

That's pretty much why I don't bother with intellectual ammo on either him or his butt buddy Chrissy.
