They don't stand apart, they are part of the current Democrat Party, which helped them win their elections. He would also see the Democratic Party, and NGOs, doing all they can to stop the voter-suppression tactics of the Republican Party - efforts that target African-Americans and other minorities.

Assuming that "used to be a Democrat" means he has a new party affiliation, I hope his efforts are successful in bringing about changes for the better in his new party.
