Irish Hurling -- A True Amateur Game

The game of hurling is more than just a game -- it is Ireland's national passion. But to appreciate hurling, one must look beyond the mere fact that it is a sport, because it is much more. Countering the trend towards big-money professional athletics, hurling has remained strictly amateur. It is a game played purely for the fun and history of it. It is a game woven deeply into the social fabric of the Irish people. Which is amazing when one considers just how extraordinarily dangerous the game is.

First, the basics:
Irish Hurling -- A True Amateur Game

60 Minutes Sports put together a feature on hurling which was broadcast right across the United States last week. In a comprehensive clip, it profiled the sport in an introductory manner, from the top level in Croke Park right down to grass-roots.

Top stars of the game were profiled, from Henry Shefflin and Michael Rice to Zane Keenan. It highlighted the difference to top American sports, and emphasised the amateur lifestyle of the players.

All in all, it was a well put together piece. But enough from us, have a look for yourself.

New Galway hurling manager Micheal Donoghue has unveiled his management team for the coming year.

As expected Francis Forde from Turloughmore, who this year managed St Rynagh’s to reach the Offaly SHC final, is a selector along with Noel Larkin from the Meelick/Eyrecourt club.

Larkin was part of the Roscommon management led by Justin Campbell, a candidate for the Galway job, which won the Nicky Rickard Cup last year.

He was also appointed as part of the management of the Connacht hurling team for the pre-Christmas inter-provincials which were postponed.

Both Forde and Larkin are highly regarded within the county having played at various levels for Galway in addition to having lengthy careers with their clubs.

The new management met the players for the first time last night (Thursday) and will have their first training session this evening (Friday) before kicking off the season on Sunday against DCU in the Walsh Cup in Ballinasloe.

Tom French, who was strength and conditioning coach under previous manager Anthony Cunningham, will continue in that role.

Former Corofin footballer David Hanly, who has worked with the Connacht and Munster rugby squads in addition to several GAA teams, will be the physio with Dr Ian O’Connor continuing as team doctor this year.

Kit manager James ‘Tex’ Callaghan will now serve under a third manager having initially been appointed when John McIntyre was in charge and continuing for the four years of Cunningham.

"Here by the Mulcaire banks I sit, mid the lovely flowers in June.
The birds are singing cheerily and the meadows in full bloom,
When on my boyhood days I think, the tears come rolling down,
For 'tis in the morning I must leave you, dear old Newport town."
