What I recommend instead is that the police and veteran groups start training ALL CITIZENS
to go through the same mental health screening, training, and oath of duty
as required to join law enforcement and military.

When all citizens are equally trained as Militia (police, veterans, first responders, security guards, campus police, etc.)
then the same rules apply to everyone. You would not disarm citizens any more than you would disarm police:
this would require screening for mental health issues to prove such people had a disability or dangerous disorder.

Instead of protesting by parading weapons,
I would recommend opening up police and military training to all citizens
to take the same Oath to uphold, defend, and enforce Constitutional laws
(including mental health screening and counseling to reduce and prevent
the causes of crime, abuse, and violence instead of blaming that on guns)
