National Debt Tops $14 Trillion

Posted by Mark Knoller

The latest posting today of the National Debt shows it has topped $14 trillion for the first time.

The U.S. Treasury website today reported that as of last Friday, the last day of 2010, the National Debt stood at $14,025,215,218,708.52.

It took just 7 months for the National Debt to increase from $13 trillion on June 1, 2010 to $14 trillion on Dec. 31. It also means the debt is fast approaching the statutory ceiling $14.294 trillion set by Congress and signed into law by President Obama last February.

The federal government would have to stop borrowing and might even default on its obligations if Congress fails to increase the Debt Ceiling before the limit is reached.

Some Republicans in the new Congress have said they'll seek to block an increase in the Debt Ceiling unless a plan is in place to significantly reduce federal spending and unfunded government liabilities on entitlement programs such as Social Security and Medicare.

that's a shame that they want to cut SS when SS is pulling in a surplus in tax revenues....and has been for 20 plus years

they should cut discretionary spending instead.

It's a fail if the mission is a solvent properous nation and government.

It's a WIN if the agenda was the bankrupt the government and the american middle class.

Now what GOP master said

My goal is to cut government in half in twenty-five years, to get it down to the size where we can drown it in the bathtub.

Lets see, obama and his socialist cronies increased the debt in two years more than the first 110 congresses combined. Then they wonder why the last election went the way it did. The idiots are clueless. Lets see the clueless come on here now and blame Bush. Idiots.

It's only Obama and the Democrats' fault if you are blaming them for continuing Bush and the Republicans' policies,

which I, for one, at least in part do.

That would be false. What is wrong with you people?

How did continuing the Bush tax cuts help that?

are any of you partisans actually concerned about the debt ceiling?

If you are then you would be behind the new congress overturning the tax bonanza that was passed a few weeks ago.

And of course you would be willing to cut ALL spending not just your pet programs and depts.

We have 2 active wars and 700 bases abroad. Couldn't we like end both wars and close down at least 400 of those bases?

Remember, we have to cut $trillions/year from the budget to restore fiscal sanity.

Complete sellout by Obama

Also a complete sellout by the Tea Party who campaigned on a balanced budget

There is NO National Tea Party.

They are all local ad hoc organizations.

Nobody who was elected last November with the support of the various Tea Parties will be sworn into Office until tomorrow.

So there could not possibly be a "sellout" before January 5th.

Just to state the correct facts.

First, SS is a wonderful system, but it is not as solvent as you think it is.

This year, the system will pay out more in benefits than it receives in payroll taxes, an important threshold it was not expected to cross until at least 2016, according to the Congressional Budget Office. Stephen C. Goss, chief actuary of the Social Security Administration, said that while the Congressional projection would probably be borne out, the change would have no effect on benefits in 2010 and retirees would keep receiving their checks as usual.

I wish people would stop spouting talking points and keep to the real facts.

Second, the fund has been raided to pay down the debt for years, so it is nothing but a house of cards anyway.

Third, refusing to put everything on the table, including the sacred cows like SS and defense, is not going to get us out of this mess. We need to have a real discussion about the problems we face, and stop the nonsense. No one wants to mess with the gray voting block, but the only way to deal with the mess we have is to be honest and admit that we are in serious trouble. Putting SS on the table, and fighting to keep it, will give us a chance to eliminate the stuff that needs to be cut. Keeping it off the table will only encourage others to keep their favorite spending off the table, and get us nowhere.
