Do they see? Do they hear? He goes golfing. They get hats. Is this simply hero worship, their latest savior? I cannot quite reject your depiction of "poor Whites" out of hand, but still, it looks like another re-iteration of the class structure to me: If you're poor, you are some how mentally, morally, developmentally defective. That is most certainly not universally the case.

Anyway, I have a far bigger problem with the portion of Whites in the solid middle class who are just as racist - even though they should, by dint of their education, be able see through the entire ploy. They, their propensity to look down on everyone beneath, blacks and poor Whites, are the main problem, the main obstacle to solving the ongoing class division that mars the American society just like the American Birth Defect. They, given their hold of considerable political power, and the information and tools to use it, particularly if joined up with the power of those upon which they look down, would be the end of the plutocracy, if they so resolved.
