How Television (and film) Subverts the Culture

Television creates characters that are personable, admirable, and even lovable. And the audience comes to like them. Then the writers have them behaving in ways that insult the culture or conflict with longstanding moral or ethical principles (sometimes called, "Judeo-Christian Values).

The audience is conflicted. How can these lovable people be behaving so badly? Maybe they are not behaving badly at all, and "our values" are just misplaced or wrong. Ultimately, the audience comes to "feel" that the behavior of these people they "like" is acceptable, and therefore it is acceptable generally, in their own lives.

Murphy Brown decides to have a child out of wedlock, in order to fulfill her own life.

A gay couple adopts a child.

Gay couples need to get married, but can't. Then they get married but continually have trysts with people other than their "spouses."

A man has more than one wife.

A married woman finds her "true love" outside marriage.

Look closely at the morality of the behavior of the stars in "Friends," "Grey's Anatomy," "Seinfeld" and the other popular shows of the past 30 years, and compare with the previous programming. They are mostly all degenerates who would be shunned by most families if their behavior was known.

This is how they sell this garbage to the general public, and this is how the public debate has been formed. A recent study indicated that almost half of the U.S. adult population thought the percentage of "gays" in the U.S. was "about 25%," when in fact it is 2-3% by most reliable estimates. Where did these adults get this mis-information? By watching TV, of course.

TV executives deny that they modify public opinions and behavior, they claim merely to be reflecting it in their programming, but this is clearly not the case.

If the people pushing this perverted world view were trying to promote it using facts and logic, it could be easily defeated, but they don't; they utilize manipulated emotions and feelings to get the desired audience response without having to bother with logical justification or scientific research. If our worst world enemy had wanted to destroy American society fifty years ago, there is nothing they could have done that would be as successful as this subversive campaign by Hollywood "elites," whose own hedonism and amoral world view pervades our entertainment business.

One should don a brain condom before watching prime time television. Only for prevention of moral "disease."
Too dumb. TV and other forms of art have always been controversial.

If you want to ban TV shows, then YOU'RE the one with the failing morals.

TV is meant to appeal to the lowest common denominator in society.Television is geared to the mentality of an adolescent..Keep it simple and keep the herd distracted.....they purposely do market research to see how to influence people...subtly and not so subtly...
Yeah it's not about the ratings no way. It's a secret agenda to subtly subvert us...

:cuckoo:

watch tv with the sound turned down..pay attention to the images you're presented with, ESPECIALLY the commercials...ask yourself why they are presenting THAT particular image...

then look at who runs the networks, advertising agencies, hollywood and media in general.
Now why would those people present images that degrade our customs, traditions, culture and heritage?

A question people have to really ask themselves is why they automatically feel uncomfortable when the ethnicity/religion of those people prefix who they are, and how most came about to feeling discomfort when the fact that Jews are identified as having such disproportionate power and influence over what's broadcasted into the homes of people living in the Western world. Could it be that they've been psychologically programmed to associate any negative or by default criticism of Jews with the Holocaust, leaving themselves open to emotional distraction or, deep down, they know their culture is being polluted by outsiders they're afraid of naming outright?

Man..Well said. Right on the money.

Television especially, but ALL media is propaganda meant to influence people...one way or another..depending on who controls the media and their agenda.
That's kind of whacko.

The goal of movie studios is to create profit at the box offices

The goal of most media outlets is to create higher viewer ratings, which increases revenue through advertising sales.

Exceptions include MSNBC, Fox, and other news networks that are subsidized by people with political agendas...and of course, movies like An Inconvenient Truth, and that one Indian guy who made that conservative Obama hit piece movie. I can't remember his name

Oh yeah...the subject....

You think the media is brainwashing people/

The people who are stupid enough to let things like Fox News, MSNBC, the movies, and TV in general brainwash them deserve it

The Conservatives and what we called "The Establishment" won the political wars of the 1970s and 80s. But they lost the culture along the way. Wringing your hands over what you might perceive as a degenerate culture shows the angst that has been festering since those heady days of the 1960s.

Had social Conservatism had anything to offer beyond Lawrence Welk reruns and televangelists perhaps they could effect a real change in contemporary culture. Sadly, their vision of popular culture is not relatable to anyone who is not white, elderly and living outside urban areas.

How television and film subverts the culture? No. It's how television and film creates pop culture. When will puritanical Conservatives figure that out?

Great post.

I've been tossing around exactly what I imagine Conservatives could do to have a program of attraction.

The big problem is Tea Party/Evangelical/Fox News "Conservatism"...is simply Nativism rebranded.

It's the place Republicans hid from the fiasco at the end of the Bush admin, and now it won't die.

They could....stop harping about:

Minorities on welfare.
Pregnant women
Gay Americans
and Liberals.

And maybe......

Unless they do that, they'll continue to be rejected and in growing numbers, unless White Christian Conservatives have a baby boom, and go to college more

Unless they do that, they'll continue to be rejected and in growing numbers, unless White Christian Conservatives have a baby boom, and go to college more
Unless there is a macro disaster (world war, plague, apocalypse) it is impossible to drive the direction of popular culture via fear and division. Desperate times call for desperate measures. Look to Hester Pirine as your paradigm of cultural reaction. Fear and division is the coin of the realm for social Conservatives. They do not seek to embrace anything novel or avant garde.

It's the innovative, the new, the imaginative that greases the skids for popular culture. Is that what frustrates and befuddles Conservatives? Nixon on the beach wearing wing tips fails to entice others to follow suit.

It's been said, along with many a contradiction I've noticed, that Conservatives tend to embrace tradition, and Liberals tend to embrace change.

Unless of course that change represents a shift from the last revolution, in which case, we can call Tea Partiers Liberals.

So that doesn't work.

But I've also heard it said, that self identified Liberals tend to negotiate complex emotional issues, but self identified Conservatives identify threats more accurately.

I dunno

(A) I don't buy the "lowest common denominator" theory. "Scripted" television (excluding "reality" television) is entertainment that is on a par, intellectually, with other comparable media (e.g., novels). Its success is based on the ability to create memorable characters which the audiences either, (a) love, (b) hate, (c) love to hate, (d) love to look at, or (e) find funny or otherwise entertaining. The story lines are secondary and usually stupid, but it generally doesn't matter. I see no evidence that scripted programming caters to the 2-digit IQ, although a lot of what goes on is not credible or realistic, even when it purports to be.

(B) Television sells advertising on the promise that it WILL INFLUENCE BEHAVIOR. Otherwise, why would any advertiser waste its money with a TV ad? Thus, the claim that TV has no influence on the culture is baloney.

(C) Most people have a very small circle of friends and acquaintances, and much of their exposure to general behavior patterns is through watching television. When you are beat over the head with a pattern of behavior, it is only natural to come to believe that this pattern is "normal" outside your own circle of relatives, friends and acquaintances, even if it would be abnormal to your group.

(D) As noted above, if scripted television is your reference, then you are influenced to believe a number of false things, for example, (i) That the percentage of "gay" people in society is statistically significant, (ii) That very few "normal" people are religious, and that essentially NOBODY makes church attendance a regular part of their life, (iii) That intelligent people are all Left leaning and people who are Right leaning are either stupid, bigoted, neurotically greedy, psychotic, or some combination of the above, and (iv) that long-term, monogamous marriage is rare and almost impossible. Furthermore, "people of color" and women are ubiquitous in all top government positions, except the ones that are inhabited by psychotics, who are all grey-haired white males.

(E) Programs of great moral degeneracy (e.g., any program produced by Shonda Rhimes) are no more popular than comparable programs where the characters lead relatively moral lives (e.g., Blue Bloods, NCIS).

Like it or not, it IS a conspiracy to destroy the culture, led by people who want to legitimize their own personal amorality.

I am not suggesting censorship, only that people watching this garbage remain aware of what is being done, and ESPECIALLY that they take care when exposing their children to this programming. It requires a clear and emphatic disclaimer, repeated often.

operation mockingbird

....all media, of course, is a propaganda tool but television is for idiots..a weapon of mass distraction to keep the herd mesmerized and passive

One of the great things is free choice.

Don't like the movie? Get up and walk out!

Don't like the tv show? Change the channel!

How simple is that?
