How did Islam fall so far behind?

The answer is actually fairly simple. The Muslim culture has been an isolationist, closed society for centuries content that the man ruled supreme over women as their mere slaves and they had absolutely no reason to change until oil was discovered in their region and they discovered they liked money and wealth and are now slowly being forced to accept and even eventually adopt some of the influences of the West which uses their oil.

I see it the other way around. Their oil wealth is being used to undermine liberal, western values.

Heck, just look at Britain where critics of Islam are whisked off the street, rung up before a kangaroo court and sent off to prison while extensive networks of Islamic rape gangs are working all over Britain.The repeated gang rape of British children is now tolerated to the point that anybody who objects is called names, and the press is under a gag order to prevent them from reporting on it.

The Middle East was doing fine until the cold war powers decided to bomb it into the stone age for the last 70 years.

Iran didnt fall back 1K years because of us. They were relatively prosperous until the revolution. THEY turned themselves into savages.

You mean the Prime minister they overthrew? Wasnt that during the last monarch of irans rule?

The Shah they overthrew. He was too supportive of liberal policy and globalism. His opponents convinced people that foreigners were suspicious, that Iran was being taken advantage of, that the country was forgetting its reigious values and becoming too secular, that they need a stronger military... they needed to make Iran great again.

They didnt overthrow the Shah. They got rid of the Prime Minister.
And are you sure about the rest? He actually nationalized the oil industry and kicked out foreign oil companies. He was the one that spoke badly of the British. He also basically became a "dictator" in his post. Changing policy on land ownership and farming.. Made the peons even more poor..
Hek, he exiled the Shahs family, wouldnt let him communicate with foreign powers etc.

There is no explaining why people choose to believe a religion. Yet, this ultimately intimate existential decision, this choice, is made by the majority. To all appearances, most people do not even realize they are making a choice, but simply go along with what their environment inculcates. 'Their' religion, like their country or their football club, becomes associated with their ego, and therefor inviolable reality. Posing a question to them about it is to threaten their being.

Well, it should be pointed out first of all that Saudia Arabia seems to be trying to modernize ....at least to some extent.

Yet.....we need to point out some things..............Ramadan fasting by pregnant women harms prenatal development

Yes...............They make pregnant women participate in that idiocy, too? Wow, just wow.

I used to work with an Iranian....very likeable and quite educated but steeped in Jew Hatred and he was not shy about it....he would talk about it without any qualms. I have seen others like this....they simply cannot understand how everyone does not share this with them.

I would add inbreeding to the list and the fact that Islam, thanks to its pure Bedouin provenance, is just anti-intellectual period.

I'll argue Islam is 600 years newer than Christianity and 600 years ago Christians were behaving pretty terribly. Heck, 80 years ago the Christians were battling a group of other Christians heck bent on genocide.

Islam does some terrible things but I can't pretend it is unique in that way.

Islam is in desperate need of a Modern Reformation. Unfortunately, there are two influential groups who are aggressively opposed to that: Fundamentalist Muslims and those in the West who enable them for their own ideological reasons.

For example, a very brave liberal Muslim Brit named Maajid Nawaz, a former member of a radical Islamist group, is risking his life as we speak fighting for a Reformation. But bring him up, and the usual suspects begin attacking him personally.

These people and countries DID NOT "fall behind" because of Islam. They fell behind due to their Tribal nature of organizing. The sectarians rifts in Islam just made the "Arab culture" MORE volatile and not focused on modern values.

And the tendency to "theocratize" their govts after then advent of Islam just made what was Arab into the laws of the land. MOST of what anti-Islam folks find objectionable in the religion is just a continuance of Arab culture and societal organization BEFORE the prophet Mohammed.

It's CULTURE largely -- not the Muslim religion.

After you're done "overthrowing the religion" -- you'd have the same negative restraints on Arab countries induced by their long standing culture. Islam developed OUT of that culture. And Islam codified that culture into law by the rise of theocracies.
