I've had a couple of clients on Long Island.
Used the subway from Times Square after midnight arrival at La Guardia and met some interesting characters but no MS-13.
I found Long Island to be quite civil and upscale.

Crime fell across Long Island in 2017, clocking historically low homicide totals even as police in Nassau and Suffolk attempted to deal with MS-13, the violent street gang officials blame for at least 14 slayings.

There were 22 homicides in Suffolk this year, down from 34 in 2016, and 15 homicides in Nassau, down from 23 — in both cases a decline of some 35 percent, the statistics show. Justin Meyers, assistant police commissioner in Suffolk, said the county’s homicide total is the lowest since 2002, when the department recorded 20 homicides.

Violent crime — which includes homicide, rape and robbery — is down this year 3.4 percent in Nassau as of Dec. 14 when there were 822 violent crimes reported versus the 851 during the same time period in 2016. The number of shooting victims in Nassau has dropped to 29 in 2017 from 52 in 2016, according to statistics.

In Suffolk, the violent-crime drop was 8.3 percent over last year through Dec. 16. The totals of all reported crimes have also dropped this year in both counties: down 7.1 percent over last year in Suffolk and 1 percent in Nassau.​

This is the exact reason (well this and other reasons such as communicable diseases) for wanting people to enter this country LEGALLY. You don't just open up your country to any old scumbag who wants to come here! You make sure that you are LIMITING the amount of criminals or people who may have diseases common to their area of the world which have already been ERADICATED here and that we do not vaccinate against anymore. These are SIMPLE CONCEPTS that anyone should be able to understand and agree with.

I am an advocate of LEGAL immigration and an immediate resolution of DACA kids unless they've been convicted of a felony - That's part of "vetting".

"When it comes to the health of immigrants, it is possible that undocumented folks have more health conditions that warrant concern, but I do not know of a scientific or quantitative assessment," Fekete said. "Workers are probably in decent health as the work itself is arduous. But there are some illnesses that occur more commonly in poor countries, such as tuberculosis, and some that occur more commonly because of farming or lifestyle issues, such as cysticercosis. But the notion that the Mexican government is orchestrating the movement of sick Mexicans to the U.S. is wacky."

He added, "Even if their health is in some ways worse than ours, we have the capacity to deal with this and produce minimum drag on our economy."​

MS-13 Gang Member Attempts to Exploit U.S. Asylum Program
July 16, 2018 | Border Patrol agents in Texas apprehended a Salvadoran national who attempted to exploit the U.S. asylum program by claiming fear for his life. The man was later identified as an MS-13 gang member during processing.

Agents apprehended the man, “who made a claim of fear to being deported back to his native country,” near Hidalgo, Texas, on July 5, the Border Patrol reported. During processing, “it was confirmed the man is an member of the MS-13 gang,” the Border Patrol said. The Trump administration’s recent enforcement of immigration policy along the U.S.-Mexico border, which sometimes included the separation of family members has thrusted the U.S. asylum program into the center of public attention.

This comes as a recent report by the United Nations now shows the U.S. is the largest recipient of new asylum applications worldwide. Further, The U.S. has seen a massive increase in non-credible asylum claims, reports from the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) indicate. “Before 2013, approximately one out of every 100 arriving aliens claimed credible fear and sought asylum in the United States. Today, one out of every 10 claim credible fear,” said DHS. Additionally, “Such claims have increased 1700% from 2008 to 2016,” DHS reports.

DHS also reports that defensive asylum applications have skyrocketed from just 13,000 in the 2010 fiscal year to over 119,000 in the 2017 fiscal year. “Similarly, defensive asylum applications, including those filed by aliens who pass credible-fear screening and are placed in removal proceedings have risen from less than 13,000 in FY10 to over 119,000 in FY17, but the number granted asylum rose by only 5,000 over the same time period,” said DHS.

DHS notes the massive asylum backlog they’re facing in the courts. “We have an asylum court backlog of over 600K cases,” said DHS. Further, information from DHS reveals that 80% of asylum seekers in the 2016 fiscal year, came from just four countries. These four countries include El Salvador, Mexico, Guatemala, and Honduras. “Eighty percent of asylum seekers in FY16 came from four countries: El Salvador (17,709), Mexico (12,831) Guatemala (11,354), and Honduras (10,818),” DHS report.

July 16, 2018 - Mexican national and two-time deportee Andres Avelino Anduaga was sentenced on July 13 to 37 months in federal prison for stealing over $350,000 in government benefits – federal, state, and local -- while impersonating an American citizen for over 30 years, according to the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of California.

In addition to his 37-month sentence, Aduaga was ordered to repay $360,908.85 in restitution to the Social Security Administration, the California Department of Health Care Services and the County of San Diego. “In 1980, Anduaga used a birth certificate belonging to a United States citizen to obtain a California Driver’s License and a Social Security card,” said the U.S. Attorney’s Office in a statement. “Already a convicted felon, Anduaga used his new identity to commit a variety of crimes over the next 22 years.”

As he admitted in his plea agreement, Anduaga used a stolen identity to apply for disability benefits from the Social Security Administration in 1989. The U.S. Attorney’s Office reported that “Anduaga received almost $250,000 in Social Security benefits that he was not entitled to receive through 2016.” As a result of the Social Security benefits, Anduaga was also able to get MediCal health benefits that further cost the taxpayers of California more than $100,000. “Even after his Social Security was terminated in 2016, Anduaga signed up for CalFresh/Supplemental Nutrition (SNAP) benefits and continued to receive those benefits right up until his arrest in November 2017,” reported the Attorney’s Office.

In addition to his “Theft of Public Property,” U.S. District Judge John Houston also sentenced Anduaga for living in the United States illegally.
“Anduaga admitted that, despite twice being deported as ‘Jose Reyes’ in 1994 and 2000, he was able to return and travel freely between the United States and Mexico using a U.S. passport that he obtained using the same stolen identity he used to defraud public assistance programs,” reads the statement.

“The theft of Social Security benefits is a direct attack on the most vulnerable and needy members of our community,” said U.S. Attorney Adam L. Braverman. “Every dollar stolen through this kind of fraud reduces the funds available to our retirees and other worthy beneficiaries.” “It is this kind of malicious theft of identity and people’s hard-earned benefits which highlights the need for vigilance and thoroughness in all encounters which Border Patrol Agents undertake to thwart this kind of illegal activity,” said Chief Patrol Agent Rodney Scott. “This successful collaboration between the Social Security Administration, the U.S. Border Patrol and the Department of Justice highlights the need for, and importance of, cooperation among law enforcement partners.”
