Hope After Faith by Jerry Dewitt

A former Louisiana pastor’s courageous memoir chronicling his conversion to atheism

Atheism’s leading lights have long been intellectuals raised in the secular and academic worlds: Richard Dawkins, Sam Harris and the late Christopher Hitchens.

By contrast, Jerry DeWitt was born and bred into the church and was in fact a Pentecostal preacher before arriving at atheism through an extraordinary dialogue with faith that spanned more than a quarter of a century.

He's on morning Joe right now. Interesting story.

I have absolutly no problem with him sharing his story. Im sure it is quite interesting.

But what exactly is courageous about a memoir?

It takes a lot of courage to tell everyone who entrusted you with leading their congregation that you no longer believe as they do.

Faith comes before hope. Noah, Abraham, Israel, Moses, David, Jesus, Peter, Paul, Brad, had faith because faith is knowing the invisible God that no man has ever seen. Because of these men of God who testified to their knowledge of God, God's people might be hopeful that these testimonies are true, which we servants know to be true.

Hope, then, is nothing more than believing our (God's servants who have faith) stories about who we are, who God is and where we're headed in the future.
